Hey everyone. Never really used wireless lan technology before, and I would like to know what anyone would recommend.

I want to connect my win 98 PC downstairs (beside the phone jack), to my dad's win NT pc upstairs about 10 metres away (just 2 doors in the way, not really much in the way of walls), and to be able to connect my laptop now and again to the PC downstairs to share in this lan. All I would want the lan to be able to do, would be

    i) for the laptop and win NT pc upstairs to be able to connect to the internet through the win 98 pc downstairs (beside the phone jack) ii) be able to play a little multiplayer game over the 3
iii) to be able to print off the colour printer upstairs connected to the win NT machine and to be able to print off the laser b&w printer downstairs connected to the win 98 machine.

Now if I could actually do all that I'd be very happy. Any advice/links people have, on what technology, both hardware and software I should use. Would bluetooth be a good idea?

    Hi,

802.11b is the way to go. It offers speeds up to 11MBit, and should work fine in your house. To cut costs, you could just buy a wireless network card for each pc, and set them up in 'Ad Hoc' mode. You could set up an access point, which is basically the same as a hub in wired terms if you want better capacity, e.t.c.

With adapters, you could probably link them all together for £300 - £400.

To share the internet, Win98(SE) has build in internet connection sharing, which will share its connection to others on the network. You could also get a more advanced utility such as wingate (www.wingate.com) for sharing.

Orinoco, or rebadged Orinoco cards are probably the best all round ones for home use. You can get them from UK retailers such as dabs.com, or from the US (cheaper).

A Wireless LAN solution is probably too expensive for your needs.

I recently set up a home network: hub 3 Ethernet cards and approx 30m of cable for just under £200.

I bought all the equipment in the small computer shop (workshop really) in Wexford and everything is working well over the last few months (including all the things you mention - remote printers, multi-player LAN game - Quake works very well).
