My sky sub has just gone up from £11.99 to £21.69! Thats a 80% rise! Why has this happened? How do they justify this?

    Yo Bond,
All Sky Sub's in the ROI have risen by a huge amount in the last year depending on when you first subscribed-It is OUTRAGEOUS!
They justify it by saying two things: 1. We here in the ROI were getting Sky on the cheap for years relative to the UK due to the punt vs stg difference-and now they are taking us to the cleaners with the introduction of the EURO-of course they are not going to be caught out with people saying that they are using the Euro to increase the price;just erm... taking the opportunity at this opportune time to adjust the price upwards towards what we should be paying.
    2. They make the argument that they are constantly adding channels and that this is costly:confused:
They say that BBC one and two are an example-I wonder how much the BBC are getting from Sky? the people that want £20 million from ITV for them to go on the Sky system.....

Now I reckon being a free marketeer as I am that we need Competition in the system!!!
Why would you want to have a movie package like that in Sky world or Movie World for nigh on £500 a year? (I say the sports while pricey can be justified for the fan)
Instead of the endless drivel and repeats on the premier and moviemax channels, I would suggest spending the £300 or so a year saved ,on a DVD player and all the UP TO DATE movies you want, with proper Surround sound ( and not the bare minimum that Sky allows you , but thats another story...).

The only chance for a decent bit of competition to enter the market here is an Irish equivalent of ITV Digital (digital tv through your aerial),which by pure fluke, I'm able to get here in Wexford:) )
When an Irish version might get going is the $64,000 question and up to Ethain Doyle, the Minister,Govt etc but its badly wanted imo.

While you were paying £11.99, most of the rest of us were paying £16 for Family Pack. My sub went from £36 for Sky World to £41.74 or €53.00. Still cheaper than one night on the rip! :D

An alternative solution would be to purchase a second hand digibox from the UK with a BBC FTV card. This would allow you watch BBC 1, BBC 2, BBC Choice, Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV when it comes.
Plus you can access all the FTA channels such as Boomerang, Sky News, TCM.
All of the above for zero subscription per annum. You could then have digital quality TV AND spend you 500 per annum on DVDs.

I actually took my own advice last night, called Sky and asked to go down from sky world to the family pack and have ordered a multiregion dvd player, that can cope with RCE disks.
The nice person at Sky put me on straight away to a "programme advisor" whose job it was to convince me that all the dross on those "movie" channels was worth the extra £200 or so.
After listening to the "programme advisor" for five minutes the switch was made-
That "programme advisor" made me feel like I wanted to leave the moonies, rather than be the consumer and walk away feeling I wasn't being bullied/brainwashed.
I first subscribed to Sky digitals full Sky world last January-so for anyone that thinks otherwise, you are entitled to switch down to the family pack if you want to (if you get past the "advisor" that is) before the year is up.

It's eazy enough to get your hands on a second hand Digibox with a BBC Card and no Sub to get Digital BBC and ch4+5 and later ITV and bbc news 24 etc -But I suspect if Sky start reading this thread,we will all find our BBC cards switched off!!!
So I would advise anyone to quit mentioning the subject.

Regarding £500 to spend on DVD's by going the above route and stopping the Sky sub entirely-personally untill some competing platform such as an Irish equivalent to ITV digital becomes widely available, I'm willing to suffer the £200 or so for the family pack as just the five UK channels and what you get FTA on a digibox is a bit limiting.
