Custom USB devices

Is it possible? What would one need? I'm assuming there is some standard piece of kit that every usb device has, and once you have that working you can build on it and add things to it.

I've looked around, but can find nothing that might help.

I've fiddled with creating custom hardware before with the parellel port, but, well, USB seems pretty cool, and it could power the hardware too if it's not something big. (And besides, I've fried the parallel port on my main machine :D)

The hard bit would be getting the computer to do something as simple as turning on and off an LED... after that it's only really modifying that.

Ooh, I'd need to write drivers for it too.

Would be a fun project, if I could find any information on it. If some company is selling a kind of usb-starter-kit that would be cool...
