Contract vs Permanent Job

    Hi guys,

Apologies at the outset if this topic has been broached on these boards, but searching is disabled and I don't feel lucky enough to stumble on it otherwise..

Was wondering if there is an offhand guesstimate/comparison as the rates of pay when contracting and when working permanently on a annual pay basis. I do understand that there can't be any absolute comparison as any comparison would be dependent on terms of both and the associated perks with a permanent position, but a ball park estimate would be welcome from those who have had the experience of having delved in both..

I'm an IT professional who has started contracting only recently and I'd just like to have an idea of how this compares to my earlier permanent jobs. I'm looking for a purely financial perspective. I have the feeling that contracting is better but I can't say for sure though.

To get you started, I was on 50K + Medical Insurance + 20 days hols in my previous jobs (no overtime even though I had to go in a few weekends). Now Im on a 6 month contract at €300 a day..

Any one care to venture their opinion/analysis?

    Cheers
    Ven

Work out how much it costs you to take an average number of sick days, holidays, how many days to find a contract, time between contracts, cost of pension, insurance, running a limited company, keeping your skills up to date. When you've worked out that, double it, to allow for things like bonuses, stock options etc, and add it to your previous annual salary. Thats a very rough approximation IMO.

Contracting is picking up again, so its probably the right time to get into it. Was patchy for the last 2-3 yrs.
