Ban text speak on boards

    All,

I would like to propose a motion to ban all text speak on boards. Text speak is the ruination of irish literacy (and makes posts irritatingly difficult to read), check some of the spelling on boards and it proves my point. So please give a yes or no and feel free to pass on your opinions.

    Have a great weekend
    Shak

    Yes.
And ban people from using too many exclamation marks. Typically from female posters below the age of 16.
    E.g:

"Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I reeeeeealllllllllly like this guy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't kno if he likes me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What do I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    type of thing.

lol, okay I do actually dislike the text speak :) way to send it home.

I don't mind the odd little word tho or a few misspellings. Ye'd want to be a bit nazi to try enforce every post to be perfecked.

so the nazis were all against text speak too

    couldnt blame them

Mildly annoying but it shouldnt be a bannable offence. A addition to the boards charters would remedy a lot of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,258 ✭✭✭✭Rabies

    Some boards already implement this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

It's already not allowed on this forum. Then again people should know this because everyone has read the charter of course....

Good, we need more people like you.

Text speak is damn annoying, and I'm pretty sure there's something in the AH charter about not posting in text speak. I don't think it should merit a boards-wide ban though, just a warning or two, then maybe a banning.

    same with me

HATE it. Really hate it. It makes me instantly assume the speaker is a gob****e who has no place discussing anything with anyone. And should probably be shot. Or stabbed. Maybe just a little maimed.

And I don't understand why text speak is so popular anyway, when surely to God every phone should have a decent predictive text thingy on it. I only use text speak for frequently used words that are too long, like tomorrow. But then I actually use colons and semi-colons in my texts so I just may be bit crazy, Eats Shoots and Leaves stylee.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

Oh you think coming across txtspk on boards is annoying?Try having a marketing lecturer who writes notes on the board in it

But yes, I think if a few warnings have been given and the user continues to do so, then ban 'em.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,811 ✭✭✭Stompbox

I think the worst thing about text speak is that when a thread like this is started everyone replies in text speak. It might be funny the first time but not the next 100 times! Why aren't they being banned?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 132 ✭✭canker

Ban the use of "tbh" and "imo", everytime I see them I go a little bit more insane :v:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

Also I'd imagine it would take longer to write in text-speak than in plain english on a keyboard. It certainly does on phones.

Remember people, vowels are your friends - use them :)

But they're acronyms, not common text speak. There's a difference in IMHO and C U TMRW

    tbh.

    brds.ie nw ur txtin :v:

You will find that it is banned on several fora. Actually I was mulling over adding a list of fora where it is banned to the biki entry on [wiki]Txt spk[/wiki]

I dont think that would be very popular tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Binomate

I only ever use tbh, imo, lol and lmao. I never ever use any other form of text speak, not even in text messages. Yay for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭Jimi-Spandex

Ban text speak, in fairness it's used to save money, it doesn't really matter here.

As for banning net speak, acronyms and the like, no chance ffs. n00b. This is where it belongs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 350 ✭✭Ray777

Unless the poster can prove that they have genuinely laughed out loud, I suggest banning the use of 'lol'. Lies make baby Jesus cry.
