was just reading your board.....mostly cos im bored (partly cos ill do almost anything to avoid studying). Anyway as the thread title suggests i have a question?

Why are you moderated by a 16 yr old who clearly isnt a trinity student?

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Who is it?

It could also be asked how College allows a discussion board like this to exist. It would be more sensible for them to set up a usenet group with a web interface; that way they could have some control over it. Or (though I hate to say it) people could use the board on the Students' Union's website. That way ultimate control isn't in the hands of the boards.ie hacks, whoever they are.

    Interesting.

Oh I just read the link now. I always thought Serenity was female for some reason. Serenity seems like a female name to me. Like Serena or something. But he is a sixteen-year-old non-student! Unbelievable. Well, don't expect this thread to last too long anyway.

yeah i had always thought Serenity was female too actually.

Its Wierd.....why would you mod in a forum that doesnt relate to you??

Just stuck me as odd. I always assumed our mods go to ucd but then again maybe not.

and yup......i can see this being locked, binned and recycled!

actually just checked our sticky thread and cant find Truckle (our moderator) on its except once to tell someone to '**** off'. His profile has him as a student though.......

    Ahahahah :D

    Hilarious!

Ah no serenity firstly is male (named after the movie as opposed to someone in a state of calm). Secondly he's a fourth year maths student in trinity, don't worry about that. Thirdly the below quote goes back to nearly a year a go when myself and himself were having a bit of a mod war editing eachothers posts.

There are no hacks here, whatever that means.

On the subject of moderators: what gives the likes of Serenity the right to tell others what they can say? At least Tom Dillon (who I presume moderates his website) is "elected".

Is there a selection procedure for moderators or is it a matey thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

They're selected by the admins based on character. Anyway, it's not like they control free speech, they just keep threads from descending into trolldom.

Boards is not a democracy. I don't see how it would run as one. Mods are appointed on the whim of the admin, who own and run this site.

I honestly think they prevent proper discussions from taking place. But who am I!

Discussions being shut down for "blatant muppetry" having nothing to do with rules.

From my experience, you tend to confuse proper discussions with flaming and flamebaiting. If you wish to get better at it look here. I suggest you not practice it here though.

Discussions are never shut down because of differences of opinion then?

Ideally no. Nobody is perfect however. Should you have a difference of opinion though, there are ways and means to express it without resorting to the practices I've mentioned above.

I think the quick answer was 'matey thing'.

Not really. It's usually based on qualification (ie DrIndy for biology/medicine) and general judgement of character from posts. I know, nor have I ever met any of the admins personally. My instances with them on boards have been rare, brief and easily forgotten.

I say himself, john2 and pet have a fight over who gets to do it. Even though i get nothing out of it I'll join in the fight for the laugh. I'll be like the wildcard and keep it a nice fair punchup with no ganging up on pet ;)

    I couldn't ruin a face like Pet's. In fact I'm pretty certain I couldn't ruin a face. I'm not that tough.

Erm, i doubt Trinity would want a message board on tcd webspace - legal issues if accusations made etc. - not worth the effort. as for the SU boards - i was a user here before this board was made, and here i shall stay. and its a shoddy interface.

also, in fairness, i think you're the LAST person who can complain about hacks really...

I think anyone who wants to run for mod should tell us, in picture form, why they should get the place. Oh, and it has to involve tea in some way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Not that it counts but I think if there were to be a new mod I'd deserve it because I've seven types of tea (Lyons not pictured) and an Einstuerzende Neubauten mug. Note to anyone who knows me, the Turkish apple tea isn't actually mine but it's in my tea space in the house.

Enough of this tea talk - coffee all the way

    http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&word1=coffee&word2=tea

Although, thinking of tea, i do have one of those cool metal 'tea bags' that i use to make green tea with loose leaves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Green tea rocks my world. As does Enya (who is actually really cool and interesting. She was so ahead of her time.).

John, I see special gunpowder tea there.. I have the same massive box of that for the past 4 years I bought in the asia market. Got addicted to the stuff when I worked in the chinese restaurant, love gunpowder, drink it by the gallon now...

    lol

I think john should be in contention aswell (honestly), I've seen his american express

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

coffee beats tea by a mile :)!

Keeping with John's off-topic vibe, this is my collection:

(three types of chai, two types of earl grey, lady grey, assam, spiced, and 'breakfast')

Master Card actually. And it's taken enough of a battering at this stage thank you very much! :D

As for coffee vs tea. There's no contest. Tea is the winner by far. Subtle flavour, multitudes of delicious blends and types, antioxidents and most importantly: it's my favourite therefore it must be true. I blind you all with my logic! :v: :v: :v: :v: :v: :v: :v: :v: :v:

And big up the Daithi with the tea pic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

but coffee's got a smoother aroma, in the mornings nothing beats it. i have to say though tea is better in the evenings as i think there is less caffiene in it so it's less likely to keep you up all night!

    coffee+ chocolate= winning combination :)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

would ye not just have a butlers hot choco n marshmallow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

ah well hot chocolate is nice but it's hardly going to perk you up enough to get you through a boring lecture!

Butlers white hot chocolate is pretty nice though.............:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

...o you like to be awake for your lectures... you see thats where your failing... its great when ye feel like a snooze for the afternoon...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Those Butlers hot chocolates are frickin' deadly. Last year we used to have a psychology lecture last thing on a Friday in the Ed Burke. I'd run over to Butlers, grab a hot chocolate go back to the lecture and sit back and relax.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Where is this Butler's you speak of? Is it on Nassau Street?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

there is one on nassau street, also one on wicklow street, and grafton street(its still there innit?)

Grafton St. one is still there. There's another one up by Steps of Rome on Chatham St.
