Just so you cant say you werent warned.

I'm not happy with the level of respect and civility that is being shown here with regard to the WTC happenings.

People calling others "Euro Mongoliods" [sic] is not just poor spelling but its rude and moronic. Its just an example, there are others.

So, if people descend into slagging matches and personal insults I will UNCEREMONIOUSLY boot them from Boards.ie.

Yes, I'm a fascist, you can have your freedom of flame somewhere else.

    DeV.

    Well said.

These are moderated boards. The key word there being moderated, implying that we, the posters, must abide by someone else's rules on what we are allowed say.

Where do you draw the line tho DeV? I'm not supporting the idiots who are acting like total muppets over this issue, but I for one would argue that while I in no way condone, support or like the attrocities that were perpetrated, I do feel that with recent american foreign policy, something like this was only a matter of time. Are opinions like this taboo?

Well, I got booted from an undernet politics channel for having (founded) opinions on the atrocities which those average Americans didn't agree with. I wasn't being disrespectful, just expressing an opinion. They frequently cited the right to free speech but then I was banned.

Basically, there's an important, yet subtle, difference between expressing controversial opinions and insulting people with value laden, derogatory comments.

I hope the freedom of constructive expression is not threatned in any way, regardless of one's opinion, but I hope people have enough respect not to wreck it for everyone by bringing down the standard of the boards and each other with childish name calling. Especially given the severity of the subject at hand.

    DeV.

Go to the CS boards if u want to flame :D

    But to my point:

Dev isnt saying u cant express your opinion he's merely saying to be civil to one another and not to insult ppl because they have a different opinion to you. i.e the topic: Politeness, Debate and YOU

He's merely saying be polite. you can debate and argue with ppl just not slag them!:p

I have always disliked boards censorism but since I'm trying not to act the muppet I ' hesitantly endorse this proposal.' :)

    Exactly Mr. Applepie.

    All I am saying is:

I dont particularly care what you opinion is, everyone has them.

I care that they are sensitively put and respectful of OTHERS opinions.

Any replying with "you're a ****in idiot" deserves to be deleted and it doesnt even register in my head as censorship due to its 0 worth.

And for once, I get to enforce my care. So if you *like* my rules, stay here and we can all chat to our hearts content.
If you dont like them then you dont have to stay in my oppressive little corner of the net, go find people who want to chat like you do or start your own boards.

I dont much care what you say but you WILL be civil.

    DeV.

To put DeV's phrase another way (I think):

Acceptable: You're wrong... and this is why.

Unacceptable: HAHahhha! Yuor'e wonrg! My mom told me too rake teh lawn but I said "YUO KNOW WHAT MOM? I'M A HUMAN TOO AND I HAVE EQUAL AMENDMENTS SO IM NOT YOUR SLAVE !!!!" and I ran to my room and slamed the door! KIDS HAEV RIGHTS TOO and I'll show my mom becuase I will grow up and make a lots of MONEYS reveiwing games and palaying Quaek liek my friend Dennis "THREASH" Fong who owns his own company whitch fires peoepal professionally! Threash made Gammars.com which was a siet for hardcore peopal with brackets in there name liek "nUnK1ll3R {ZuG}" or "JeRRy {FAGOT}". I WILL PUT BRACKETS IN MY NAME SO I CAN FIRE PEOPAL LIEK THREASH TOO!

Heh, check out Eoghan Harris from the Sindo and Fintan O'Toole from the Irish Times and their current rubbishy argument.

So it basically just comes back to the old netiqutte debate doesn't it? I don't think any poster worth speaking of will argue against moderating muppets :) I was jst unsure how far you were taking the disrespectful issue. Some ppl in rl have taken major issue with me saying that the US drew it on themselves.

I can certainly sympatise with Dev as regards people being extremly crass and hurtful towards others and I'm willing to bet that these people wouldn't have the guts to speak openly like that face to face with people. But on the other hand I do think that it is forums such as boards that offer people the only chance of unfetterd speech to a wide audience. I don't know if you have read the book 'No Logo', it's excellent I definitely recomend it, but she mentions an example of people being barred from internet sites because of political views they expressed towards Northern Ireland.

Unfortunately one of things about free speech is that you have to listen to the things you don't want to hear as well as the things you do. I know Dev that this isn't a public notice board but I would urge you not to censor people views. It would leave us reading only certain sides of the arguement and I can go out and read the tabloids instead. Try if possible to ignore the dopes

I think Dev was saying that you can express whatever view you like, as long as you do it civilly. Boards has been a great forum (IMHO) for just that reason - you can express an opinion which may be anathema to others without fear of censure. TO make it even better, those who get "uppity" at your view are the ones who get censored.

Obviously I'm not making myself clear.

No actually, obviously you guys arent reading what I write :)

"I dont much care what you say, say what you like in fact but you WILL say it civilily and courteously."

Civility and politeness have no bearing on the contents of the point being made so I dont see how anyone could consider it censorship.

    DeV.

Indeed. It's far better to dismember your opponant's argument than to call him/her names. Far more effective.

But on the issue of moderation and censorship on Boards, it should be remembered that there's a fine line between moderation and a messiah complex.

agreed, these things go much much better when personal insults are left at home,

Aw listen you idiots, just waiting for some reason to scream about the infringements of your rights to free speech.
What DeV is talking about, in pure plain English, is dont be abusive and dont be ignorant.

You can say what you like, there is no problem with that. Whatever dodgy opinion you might have, you are allowed to say it, as long as you adhere to the simple code of basic manners. There are loads of boards that allow immature kids to abuse each other, ye can go there if you want a row.
