What Laptop Manufacturer would U buy?

Right, after a few weeks of looking at various laptops (and from listening to people's opinions) I am going to ask a simple question:

"What Laptop manufacturer would you buy and where is it available?"

I have heard many mixed opinions about Dell Laptops which has (unfortunately) turned me off them, which is a pity cos they seem nicely priced.

I am looking for a laptop to be used for some websurfing, NOT GAMES playing, some programming Java and C# (Eclipse and Visual Studio)...and that's about it folks...battery life doesn't really matter because it will be plugged in most of the time...kept in the house all the time (to be used as a desktop PC due to space limitations from a standard PC). (Budget: 1000 - 1200 euro).

    Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd go for dell. I've never had any prob with them and I've bought several PCs from them. If things have gone wrong I found their support quite good.

Acer have nice laptops, but their support is sh1te compared to Dells. Takes them days to respond to email queries and the only phone number is charged at international rates to UK.

IBM make good solid laptops. Bit pricey though.

Have had lots of Dells and an IBM thinkpad. Thinkpads don't die, but Dells support, for the main, is good. It is useful to know what you are talking about when you ring their support or they will give you the go around, but that shouldn't be an issue for someone who uses Visual Studio.

Toshiba would be my choice - wish I had bought one.
Stay away from Acer and HP.

Dell like most laptop manufacturers have more than one range
    Inspiron faster/cheaper/less stable than Latitude

I wouldn't touch the Compaq Amarda's but the business ones were grand.

Toshiba - have the best track record of making good laptops consistantly, no real turkeys to speak of. ( www.bms.ie )

Sony - Daft prices on the power adaptors, if you decide to go that route then scream at them for their heavy handed DRM http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=318693

great. Thanks for the feedback everyone. Seems that Dell hasn't come out too bad but Toshiba seems to be the way to go. yeah, I see Soundstore are running deals on Toshiba models at the moment....not bad but I just don't like handing over lots of money to Soundstore...don't like doing busy with them...very arrogant and only seem to be interested to talk to punters who know very little about computers so that they can pull the wool over their eyes..IMHO!
