HELP - Laptop Screen Gone !!!!!!!!

Can anyone give me a dig out on this one please.

Have a Gateway SOLO 9300 and just had screen go blank/dark on me, i.e. I can see NOTHING. THe laptop is on, fans working, everything else is clicking/whirring away but screen is GONE.

Surfed around a bit in an effort to find solution but not any great avail. Best case scenario may possibly be a CCFT backlight - worst case scenario is a new TFT screen which is around €400 - €500 according to some sites.

Anyone have any similar experiences OR better still, know anywhere (Dublin preferrably) I can bring it to to have it looked at and not get ripped off.

Oh and by the way, its the second screen on a Gateway 9300 to go on me within 12 months.

Any advice (other than stay away from Gateway) would be greatly appreciated

it might just be an inverter which you _might_ be able to pickup for a reasonable price (Cannae think of anywhere offhand for GateWay- try eBAy..)

first things first: any output on an external VDU (i.e. Computer monitor?)

I take it you have tried all the Fn F5 combos in case switched off at keyboard - then check bios in case default to external.

Look at the display with a torch to see if the pixel are changing => backlight
or it could be no display at all => loose connection or hw failure

sometimes applying gentle pressure to the screen may help to detect a problem - don't forget it's a very thin sheet of glass

Sounds like the backlight is gone. I have a Solo 5300 and the same thing happened to it. Mine is being sold off for parts at the mo

agreed, if u can see pixels changing its the ccft , which is 10 bucks and u can fit urself (but are better advised to let someone who has done it b4.
if the screen is dead, could be anything, from the mobo, to the inverter, to the tft, to the cable that connect the tft to the mobo.

Just my 2 cents but i assume you have tried an external monitor on this to verify that the video card is functional?
If this is the second screen within 12 months who replaced the original? i.e Was it under the Gateway warranty or did you buy and fit a new lcd or invrtr? i.e you should have 12 months warranty on a replacment if purchased from a 3rd party

Battery is only 4 or 5 months old got it in a place in Cork from the states are U interested
