    Hi All,

Wonder if you guys can give me some advice: I have access to a college network and people can grant access to shared folders on their computers, which is cool. The small issue I have (that I hope you can resolve) is that if i click on some computers I cant access them - no problem, BUT it takes about 15 seconds to respond telling me I have no access when in reality I know that if it doesnt connect within about a second I wont get access - anyway to reduce this "seek"(note my poor attempt at using the correct terms!) time?

Also, some of the computers require you to enter a password - how do they do this? I probably won't password-protect my computer, but I'd be interested to find out how!

    Thanks in advance! :D

Are you using XP home or XP Professional / Windows 2000 Pro.

XP Home uses simple file sharing, without password protection available.

I've seen suggested registry hacks but nothing I've tested.

If you've XP Professional, you can
    1. Create a new user account
    2. right click on the shared folder/Sharing/Sharing Permissions/ Add
    3. Add the new user to give permission to log on to this folder
    4. Remove the Everyone entry if it exists

windows timeouts - don't you just love them - love the way explorer hangs - it's not like they haven't had time to figure it out.

NT 3.1 came out in Aug '93 and WFW came out in Feb 94

I usually do stuff like this in dos for that reason

If using XP home or even pro you should consider sharing via a FTP server instead of file sharing.

Yeah, you're speaking right to my heart! :D

Not an option, ftp on being allowed on the network. Anyway its not a big deal - people just look to see what others have on their computers to share, some funny vids, music things like that. (all legit of course). The annoying thing is, well it's windows! ;) Just wondering if I can minimize that waiting when I know that if it doesnt open right away, it isn't going to open(if I know this, how do I tell windows this?)

    it's "within spec." :p

Damnit. I cannae remember at this time, but: in UL - they have web-browser/access to the F&P shares ("Marty"?) .. perhaps someone in UL can tell you the name of that - it makes it a lot nicer to search/browse (IIRC - it's O.Source too)

The overhead associated with F&P sharing is probably gonna raise an eyebrow from your network admin if it's used by more than a small handful of people.

Response time on network browsing depends to some extext on other nodes ..

anyhooow: i dunno if it'd speed up the Timeout response time but you could try the tweak/hack to stop Windows looking for Scheduled Tasks (It'd make sense that this would speed things up a tiny bit...so chances are it won't..sense..pah!...mumblerantmumble)

NT 4 winfile.exe all the way. Under 250 KB, and no install process required.

I can access a crowded (say, 81000 files) shared directory in NT4's file manager (running under 2K) in one hundredth of the time it takes 2Ks explorer, locally or remotely.

And it doesn't require a registry hack to keep it from freezing the desktop by running as a separate process while doing so.

Aaannyways other than the command line, or using Map Network drive to enter the share name and map as a local drive (which can be cancelled) don't think there's much that you can do.

    Karoma:
might that be webdav? (available as a module in apache and others)
