I have just changed over to broadband and am still at the hoeymoon stage, ie
clicking on allmost anything but as my main intrest is tv and films I have been
checking out the FREE tv and free movie downloads etc.
My question is, are these actually free or am I likely to have a heart attack
    when the bill arrives?

Depends on what you're looking at, where you're looking at and if they're legit or not.

Oh its just a hidden news group that you pay money to access, every piece of information inside it is 99.9% illegal.
the .1% is maybe the few Linux distros in there.
I done a free trial and cancelled

to answer your question: yes, they are free, but illegal.

no, you won't have a heart attack when the bill comes most likely unless you've downloaded alot more data over your monthly transfer allowance, and even then it's highly unlikely that your ISP will charge you.

if you were under the impression that what (and not how much) you download will affect what you get charged, then you've an awful lot to learn about the internet in general.

Usenet itself is just a means of communication over the Internet and has actually been around an awful lot longer than the WWW that we all know and love.

However, a lot of the material that you may find in the alt.binaries.* hierarchy is copyrighted material being posted without the permission of the copyright owner and therefore illegal.

But there's an awful lot more to Usenet and it's a fantastic way to talk about pretty much any subject under the sun.

Thank you all for your help.

I found one wonderful film streaming site (legal) which
has films from the American south. Alan lomax and Delta Blues as well
as a lot of really great stuff relating to folklore etc.
    Folkstreams. net.:D :D

I would also like to download some movies.

I have been downloading music from alloffmp3.com which I am told is legal.

Is there a similar site for movies?

I would prefer to pay a reasonable price for a reasonable service rather than pay nothing for a bad and illegal service.

Its not legal, its just a loophole in russian law, that site will be shut down soon.

alloffmp3.com is legal, atm, within Russian borders...but as you may have noticed Ireland is not part of Russia.

Essentially you are breaking the law and your only excuse, if IRMA come knocking, is ignorance.

If you want legal (uptodate) mp3 downloads goto www.wippit.com approx 75 euro a year and if you stop after a year you keep your mp3s.

As for movies, I have not come across any upto date legal site that service europe yet. The nearest I can find is www.cinemanow.com which has a 24hour timebomb on downloads or streams. The only thing close is www.movieflix.com which need realplayer.

This quote might clarify it's status for you...
    www.allofmp3.com is an illegal site.

The music industry is working with the authorities in Russia in order to
take this site down but I'm afraid we are not in a position to offer any
details at this stage. On the more practical side of things, Paypal has
withdrawn its facilities from allofmp3.com and we are working with the
principal credit cards companies helping them to understand the site's
unauthorised nature. Amex has been understanding and helpful and we hope
that Visa will take appropriate action, though that is of course a matter
    for Visa to decide.

    Interesting..
I'm well aware of it's status, however I think it's rather unlikely that it's going to close down anytime soon.

The amount of cash it's making must be phenomenal - for the Russian authorities to suddenly stop this and bow to Western pressure isn't something they'd be in a hurry to do I imagine.

Also the fact that the RIAA etc. rarely mention it, seems to me that they're aware that there's not much they can do about it at the moment, and highlighting it in the media would only give it more coverage.

(Needless to say, "it's an illegal site" is an oversimplification, it still appears to be legal in Russia at least. If it was such a simple case then they would not need to be lobbying the credit card companies as much as they have been.)

    (edit: linky http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03/07/allofmp3-com_let_off/)
