I'm trying to format a floppy which I just bought new 10 minutes ago This is what I have been doing:

    1)My computer
    2)Right click on 3 1/2 Floppy A:
    3)Format..

    4)These are the default options:

    Capacity:
    3.5", 1.44mb, 512 bytes per sector

    File system:
    FAT

    Allocation unit size:
    Default allocation siza

    Volume label:
    (left it blank)

    5)OK

Then it gets about 1/3 the way through the process and tells me "Windows could not complete the format". Im ****ed if I dont get this working so any help greatly appreciated.

Do you have another disk to try? Or another PC to try it in?

Floppies are terribly unreliable so it's no surprise if it's the disk that's broken.

i would say you are almost odds on that your floppy drive is fecked - they don't get a whole of use these days and seem to be flakey as hell. Go out and try and find another computer...

Agreed - floppy drives that seem to work fine have often annoyed the hell out of me - throwing away perfectly good disks that would have worked on another drive.

    into a command prompt

    format a: /u

and if there is an error you will see what it says.
