Employment Noise Regulations

    Hi All,

All this week in work, there has been some noisy as hell construction going on right beside a load of us technicians in work. I'm wondering a couple of things:

    1) I heard that many employees get a disturbance compensation payment for having to deal with such constant noise when it is not a part of their normal jobs. Is this true in all cases or only in unionised workplaces?

    2) Why does the HSA (Health&Safety Authority Ireland) charge people money to download a copy of the noise regulations? That is scandalous! (http://www.hsa.ie/publisher/site_search.jsp)

Anyone know what the noise regulation guidelines are? It's seriously bad, constantly drilling all week, and I've been leaving work stressed and with headaches from having to sit here while the place is being torn apart. I raised the issue with team-leads and managers, and their solution to the problem was to issue us with cheap plastic ear-plugs, which I don't think is acceptable.

Yeah theres a serious racket here at the moment and Pighead can't hear himself post. Its been pretty much constant all week for 8 hours a day.The workers are getting restless and narky and something must be done.Only men operating Kanga hammers should put up with this crap.Once again an American Multinational disregards the basic work laws because its got the government in its big fat pockets.

Is your employer behind the work causing the noise?
If not, it's out of their hands and I'm afraid the ear-plugs are probably the only option.

    Info here http://www.hsa.ie/publisher/index.jsp?&1nID=93&pID=97&nID=390#exposure
and you dont have to pay for it

:) Good old pighead...brings a smile to DubGuys face every time.

Anyway, I am wondering if you have discussed with management wanting a alternative solution? Often management will keep schtung and hope nobody will say anything...then attempt a cheap, easy solution and see how it sits...no doubt behind closed doors they have discussed a contingincey plan. Possibly temporary re-location. If not, suggest it to them, as it's unacceptable, and legislation is on your side.

Having said that, career wise, I'm not sure it's such a good idea though for 5 or 6 of you to storm into a managers office throwing legislation at him and meowing on about compensation & if you don't do anythinhg about it, we'll take action talk... That should be a last resort.

My employer is paying a contract building company to carry out work on the premises about 30 feet away from where I am sitting... aaaargh **** it! I can't take anymore, they are grinding metal, kangoing floors for my 8 hour shifts all week... I'm going mad!

Oh and, kudos, you didn't have to pay for that information, but why should anyone have to pay to view the 8 page noise regulation on www.hsa.ie?!?

I'm going home to sit in a quiet place for a few hours.... shouldn't be allowed, I'm stressed again and have a headache. The poxy earplugs don't fit comfortably in my ear holes either... let's get new jobs Pighead.
