Disable the touchpad- how?

I'm using a Targa Traveller laptop with an external usb mouse and I'm getting a little annoyed with the touchpad. Basically when I'm typing(and tired/drunk) my hand will brush against the touchpad and the curser will change from where I was typing to somewhere else causing much annoyance

Has anyone any idea's how I'd temporarily disable the touchpad. Ideally I'd like to create a shortcut to disable/enable the touchpad.

I'd like to still be able to re-enable the touchpad for the times I don't have my usb mouse plugged in so I don't think uninstalling the driver is a good idea.

Anyone else come across this problem and have a simple solution? Or is it something that I'll have to train my awkward hands to deal with?

(May need to boot with mouse plugged in)
Start -> run -> devmgmt.msc -> mice and other pointing devices (sometimes HID) -> right-click -> select what you want rom the Device Usage dropdown

And think about implementing hardware profiles. Check windows help for more info.

A HP laptop has this as a shortcut key option so I would check on the support website if there is a better version of the currently installed driver and/or utility that might bring you this feature as a key shortcut.
