Just had a look at their online store. Pye DVD recorder is €159.95 so you got the bargain of the year.
had a look at the others and the Pye model is the cheapest

What region is it? Can it be unlocked?

Is it a refurb machine - sometimes Power City sell refurbed equipment (marked and priced as such).

What exactly is refurb. The model was advertised on p 21 of the Sunday World. Not that iam very fond of Power city. The place is awful filty and gruby looking.

Very true but you're not going there for the decor.
PYE dvd recorder in Powe City [finglas] for E 64 Sunday
That is a steal.
Just above the price of a normal DVD PLAYER!

The price of DVD Recorders has dropped in the last few months and should be way lower coming up to Christmas.

The cheapest I've seen recently is a DVD recorder (not sure of brand name) in ASDA in Strabane. It is selling at £85 -- approx. €127
I would think its in all the ASDA stores so if anyone is up North and think this is a bargain then hopefully you enjoy

I'm looking at it now.
It says 64 Euro all right but I'd say that's a mistake.
My guess is it should be 164 instead of 64.

The OP bought it for 64 euros

Your right. It is a Misorint. The store claimed that the E 64 was actual the price of the Phillips player next to it and they got the pricese mixed up. However the store manager admitted that if they advertised it at that price thay had to sell it at that price. So I got a recorder for E64

If anybody is looking for a dvd writer Tesco are doing a Philips model for €199 at the mo. Admittedly not as cheap as the Pye model above but the quality is excellent and it is really easy to use (it has videoPlus). Much easier to use than the one I bought in Dunnes last year which is now sitting in the corner.

Is he right??

He isnt right. Conceivably they could be done for false advertising but they are under no obligation to sell you goods at the advertised price.

Why Not. If they advertie it are they not obliged to provide it at that price. Waht are the penelties for false advertising

edit: Woho 100

Because in order to for you to buy something there has to be an offer and acceptance. This is the basis of a contract. An advertisement does not constitute an offer it is what is called "an invitation to treat".

Invitation to treat: An offer to receive an offer. Goods advertised by a shopkeeper are open to offers from customers. If goods are mistakenly marked with the wrong price, the retailer is not bound to accept that price because he has not offered the goods at that price: he has invited members of the public to make him an offer which he is entitled to accept or reject. A retailer who deliberately or consistently misprices goods, however, may be commiting an offence under the Consumer Information Act.

What would happen if they were to be "done" for false advertising

Its not false advertising,

Whats the company to gain by printing a false price?

Its not like if you call in to power city to buy it for 64 euro you will STILL buy it when you realise its 164.

Its just a mistake, and if the manager really did sell it to you for 64 than he is a moron and doesnt know the basic retail laws.

As has been said already the ad in the paper is merely an "invitation to treat" and in no way legally binds Power City to sell the DVD Recorder at that price.

I went in to Power City in Finglas a couple of hours ago. The sticker on it said €159. It had a "Special Offer" sticker on the shelf it was sitting on. I asked one of the helpful* happy* staff if it was €64. He pointed to the price sticker. I asked about the "Special Offer" - he said it was special because of the price of the other recorders there.

The other day, another DVD player I was looking at was marked at €70, when it was really €65 (the Philips one) - this mistake was only realised when the woman put the code into the computer. I mentioned it to the guy, he didn't look off into space*, and promptly*, without being coaxed* went to the computer to check.

I also asked him if there was a special offer over the weekend, or if they were selling refurb items like mentioned on this thread. Again, he didn't stare off into space*, and only had to be asked once* before he replied no.

No bt really what is the penelty for False advertising. On another note spoke o a buddy of ine. Who picked the same player up in Power City Bray for E100 last Sunday. Did anybody else get one

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

Well needless to say DIDN'T get a DVD Recorder last night for 64 Euro :(
Called into the shop and the bloke said "the prices were the wrong way round i.e. Philips DVD Player was 64 Euro and the Pye Dvd Recorder was 159 Euro.
When I pointed out the Sunday World ad, he just repeated "they are the wrong way round". I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere having a row so I didn't bother.
Noticed today on page 5 of today's IT, the add has been corrected.
Well done to anybody who got it at 64 Euro, bargain!

I'm nearly sure the Pye recorders are rebranded Philips. At least, the ones sold by Expert shops are.

That's going off-topic as it wasn't false advertising. False advertising is intentionally stated something false in order to induce a purchase.

In this case it is a mistake and even if someone was bloody-minded enough to bring them to court over it, the judge would throw it out as it was simply a mistake. So there would be no penalty.

If I was the shop owner in this case, I'd have just said
"Sorry we have none of those ones @64 Euro left but I do have some at 164/159 Euro instead and they come with a box!"

There is no need to make excuses, just refuse to sell at that price.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

But if you refuse to sell, the shopper mightn't come back.
If you say "Sold out", then they mightn't get the hump and return.
