Buying a "cool" slim digital camera

Yes yes, I know. It should make no difference what a camera looks like it's all about quality of image.

However I have been put in charge of buying a camera as a present for my sister. She seems more interested in what it look likes and how slim it is than anything.

In reality I think shes one of these people who thinks they need a camera when in fact they just want one because they've seen them in magazins and on tv etc.

I can't really seeing her useing it apart from the odd holiday.

So basically I'm looking for something that looks "cool" without being a waste of money and at the same time not spending too much on it as I predict it sitting in a drawer in the near future

She saw the Fuji Finepix Z1 and liked it.

I think the Canon Ixus 50 might be a good purchase.

They would both be at the top of my budget.

Really appreciate any advice or suggestions on alternatives.

    Thanks

I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-T7.

They don't come much slimmer than that.

    It's 5.1 Megapixels but doesn't have a great zoom on it... it's just 3x.

Also only has a large LCD on the back, no viewfinder... so if the lighting isn't great it's very hard to see what you are taking a photo of.

    But it looks very cool.

I think I paid around €370 for it.

yeah, the Cybershot DSC-T7 is great, has a nice big screen, and with 5.1 MP thats pretty good.

    How about:

Same one if she likes orange :phttp://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/113680/art/casio/exilim-card-ex-s500-orang.html

    hope that helps..

Sadly I think the colour will make a difference, the orange could be a big selling point

Yeah the T7 is a nice camera. A lot of money to spend on something that won't get used. I would be able to borrow it though :)

Thanks for the replies. Guess these small cameras come at a price. I'll keep looking around

Pixmania is probably the best place to buy from though.

The T7 costs €525 in a Sony Centre in town.

Pixmania is good, but get the Zen Engagement thing, it'll be your only returns policy, like otherwise you'll only have 7 days warranty, basically, if it's broken when you get it you can return. Nothing else.

We have the Ixus 40 aka SD300 for snaps (20D for the major stuff). its a great little camera and I suspect the 50 is better still. its very small but as a carry around camera it works really well. Great quality photos too.

Thats a briallint camera. It would be such a good camera to replace a DSLR, like if you couldn't bring in to a gig or something.

I also have a Sony T7 (black), Its a mad price in shops but I got mine off ebay for about €290.

the screen is amazing and apart from lack of decent zoom, its pretty impressive picture wise. plus its very simple to use.

Hate this kind of consumerism tbh.

My sisters and cousins etc are getting 40gb ipod photos to put some pics of jenson buton aprox. 20 and 300 songs (no joke, that is what my cousin of 13 has just done.) Tis fairly sickening the amount of money is wasted in this way. Same deal with extravigant cameras, then stupid parents coming into work (toymaster) and lookin psp's for their brats at christmas and i can't even get work to hold me one to use my lovley staff discount on! what else am I gonna use my staff discount on in a fookin toy shop?

    [/rant]

dunno what that has to do with anything.

Solution: get her the blingest cheap camera you can find, dont take any note of image quality battery life etc.

    The Leica? - Not really. It uses the same chip as the Lumix DMC-LX1, quite noisy according to DPReview.com;

And certainly not something you'd 'replace a dSLR' with.
