Scanning old slides

I have a box of my Dads old slides and am wondering if anyone has any experience of scanning these?

I have an Epson Perfection 3490 Photo scanner which came with a template which takes three slides and lies on the scanner window. When I try and scan I just get unrecognised image warnings.

    Anyone any ideas?

    Thanks

I have a HP scanner with a similiar fitting. There's a setting in the software to indicate if you're scanning from the flat bed or from the slide scanner - it uses a backlight, so has to turned on - maybe that's it?

Or you could have a look here

Obvious maybe, but are you taking the inner lining off the lid before scanning?

ajmull ... you are right ... I am the king of the muppets.

I was on to epson this morning and they helped me to realise the
plastic cover in the lid must be removed to backlight the slides ... doh!

    Thanks for the replies
