fair play man.. fair play indeed..

I was only reading ''how to build your own electric guitar'' by Melvynn Hiscock last night, i've been thinking of putting a guitar together for months.. But i still haven't decided on body etc, i'll probably go with the tele, but i don't know which, standard? custom? thinline???? Then there's pickup config?? Just hard decisions man... hard hard hard decisions.

How did you find the finishing? Where did you do it? Home?

What was the total cost in the end? How would you rate it compared to a Fender tele?

I have never played a real Telecaster to be honest.. Not even a Copy.

Playin for years and never even thought about picking one up in a shop. Always been playin a Jap Strat which I picked up in 92 or 93. never let me down yet. I have that book by Melvyn Hiscock also, bought it ages ago and only really started going through it when I bought the Tele, I have another book also which is by Martin Koch, Building Electric Guitars. In some way this book is better for explaining why things are done a certain way. He really goes into construction Theory and shows numerous Jigs and time savers for those who wish to be able to repeat the process. Really recommend that book.

As for finishing on the guitar. I used a Standard Dark Mahogany wood stain on the back and for the front I bought a Binding Router bit and Binding from Stew Mac and cut the channel. B&tch bending the binding I would probably not use wood binding again in a hurry. there are a few spots which I had to just butt the joints as I could not bend the wood any more.

The Blue finish is Dyon "think that is the name" the clothes dye. Put on about twenty coats of the stuff and then fine sanded with 1200 and 1500 grit paper.

To finish I applied a Clear General purpose Lacquer that I got from Halfords, Pretty easy to use really and gives a fairly good surface. I will probably add a few more coats in a couple of weeks when it hardens fully and then buff the finish some more..

I'll try to get some better shots of it but the camera I have is not great.

    Cheers for the comments.

Total Cost was $ 610 US.
After all shipping and handling for parts.

Could have done it cheaper if I had ordered everything at the same time.

I reckon I could have done it for around $520 or there abouts.

    Quick question though...

I am getting buzzing on the High E String I though it was a high fret at first but I have located it at the Nut,, Only happens when I have the guitar fully tuned up. If I tune the string down about three notes it stops. Something to do with the tension of the string and the Shape of the Nut slot only on this string. A bit annoying really as open E's buzz..

Any one seen this before.. I am thinking I may need to file the Nut slightly.
But then I am wondering if possible the slot is too large for the string..

I have 9's on it at the moment which I am fairly sure these necks are set up for. I tried tens and had the same problem..

    Cheers

if it's buzzing when played open, then it's most likely the nut.. but then again, i am only pretending to know what i'm talking about.

Are you really based in Kansas? I would think that's a low total cost, but then again shipping would be less if you really are based in america..

Your B and E string retainer is a fair bit away from the nut, if you move that closer (which would increase the angle of the strings over the nut and apply more downward pressure on the string over the nut) that might help a bit.

Edit -> Also, is the nut perhaps moving down when fully up to tune (ie when the tension of the strings is at it's greatest)? Is the string clearing the first few frets ok?

No.. Unless Kansas has relocated to North Dublin/Meath border ;)

Yeah it is kind of weird, Good suggestion though Doc..

I did fit the string retainer by putting it in a place where I though it should go I probably should have looked at a few guitars in town first.

    Could be the reason.

I'll apply some pressure there and see if it makes any difference.

So you planning on doing a Guitar Lundi??
It is a great way to learn the ins and outs of the guitar gives you a good basis for repair work too.

    Cheers

It is a common issue and it's what the string retainer is there for, so adjusting that should help.

It looks pretty damn sweet. I hope some samples are forthcoming! :D

i've been planning on doing it for quite a while now, you've given me the push to actually get off my arse and do it though!!

I'll be doing a tele too, although i'll be going for a HH configuration, mahogany with quilted maple top with a natural finish.. don't fancy painting, so need a nice wood for the natural finish..

If you're gona build a guitar, that Melvyn Hiscock book is a lifesaver but there's one by the legendary Bob Benedito. Its about building arctops I think but it has the best general advice i've ever read and I have about a dozen books on the subject. It gave me so many little tips that made the difference when I built mine. It really is the business if you can get it!

How did you do the edging and the paint work on the body?

Im looking for something like that on the guitar im building, but i want it in a sharp dark red.

    That looks the balls btw!

The binding is done with this http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bindings,_trim/Wood_binding_and_purfling/Natural_Wood_Bindings.html

    and this.

    http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Routing_bits/Binding_Router_Bit_Set.html

The finish on the back is standard Mahogany wood dye.

The blue on the front is Clothes Dye a lot of coats and buffing after every few coats..

I would say you could use a red wood dye though. try on a test piece first .
