whitewashman wants to know why you get so easily annoyed over something so petty and trivial.
whitewashman has found that people who are easily annoyed and irritated over small things generally have self issues.

    LOL irony!

Seriously though, way to make the most obvious joke possible regarding this thread.

He also has a sh*tload of upcoming psychiatrists bills to pay so if you'll excuse him he'll be on his merry way...

Einstürzende does not mind it once the post itself is of reasonable quality, unlike this one.

cil_aine finds posting in the third person slightly pretentious but quite amusing all the same.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

Silverfish used to hate it, but she sees that its not that bad really, and find it quite amusing.

I mean, Silverfish just thinks there's lots of people with different posting styles, and some r jst more annying thn othrs, k?

Fair enough!!I am dyslexic and have tried hard to get spellings etc right. My post is about people speaking in third person.
It annoys a LOT of people,my reason for posting here was to see what people think.
Being able to write clearly is a problem a lot of us share ,speaking in third person isnt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

It annoys me a lot. Personal pronouns were invented for a reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,335 ✭✭✭Cake Fiend

It's pretty sad alright, but hardly something to blow a gasket over. Also, these people are possibly doing it for the attention, so if you make a whole thread devoted to their antics, they'll only be encouraged.

If reading posts like those hurts your brain so much, why not just put the offenders on 'ignore' and be done with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Maguined

Mikaboshi believes posting in the third person is fun, Mikaboshi feels like it makes him more powerfull and can defeat any and all comers. Mikaboshi believes it can be overdone. Mikaboshi believes it cannot be overdone by himself because he is so all powerfull.

Mikaboshi thanks the O for providing him with an excuse to post in third person. Mikaboshi is finished making his point.

My apologies then. I was merely pointing out that nobody is perfect. I am guilty of it myself (which you could see if searching was enabled). If i'm honest posting in the third person does really annoy me, but I usually brush over the posts due to lack of interest. Sorry again, I didn't mean to offend.

Doesn't bother me either; it puts a different touch to a message board when someone writes in a different style.

Yeah, it's interesting psychologically. People who become famous often start to refer to themselves in the third person, and it's often a sign that they're going off the rails: "You may say that the leader of the LVF would do that, but Jim Gray would not do that, and he is telling you that now."

    Quick course in apostrophes:

    * No personal possessive pronoun ever uses an apostrope: his hers, its, theirs, ours.

    * Other than in these pronouns, apostrophes are always used to denote possession: Mike's hat, Niamh's gloves, the boy's mother [one boy], the woman's skirt, the women's skirts, the people's party, the children's games, the men's moustaches, the boys' mother [two or more boys - see, it's after the "s" there?] (In these cases, according to grammatical urban legend, the ' stands for the word "his", so it's "Mike(his) hat" and so on.)

    * In "n't" words, the apostrophe stands for the missing letter "o" - isn't, wouldn't, hadn't and so on - so it always goes between the "n" and the "t".

    * If you're just making a plural, and there's no ownership involved, you don't use an apostrophe: the boy, the boys; the book, the books.

    * Apostrophes are nothing to do with dyslexia. They're to do with being taught the rules badly, or being too unnerved by reading matters generally to take in the rules.

OK, now you know all about them.

    Shouldn't it be:

    Mike's hat,
    Niamh's gloves,
    the boy's mother [one boy],
    the woman's skirt,
    the womens' skirts,
    the peoples' party,
    the childrens' games,
    the men's moustaches,
the boys' mother [two or more boys - see, it's after the "s" there?]?

Not that it matters, seeing as "women", "people" and "children" are plural nouns. It would be more important with:

    The boys' mother,
    The brothers' house,
    The dog's kennel.
