RALLY IRELAND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BID SECURES UK SUPPORT

    From Motorsport Ireland - MI
    Quote:
A cross-border bid to secure a round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) for Ireland on an annual basis from 2007 is the subject of a lobbying campaign by Britain's biggest Motorsport Publication, Motorsport News.

Motorsport News launched its "Go Ireland" campaign to help convince the Federation International d'Automobile (FIA) that Rally Ireland should be part of the WRC schedule from 2007. The weekly publication includes a coupon for readers to complete and return and the magazine's online petition of support for the bid is attracting a large number of signatures.

Rally Ireland, a joint initiative of Fáilte Ireland and the Northern Ireland Events Company (NIEC), is bidding to secure a round of the prestigious World Rally Championship in Ireland on an annual basis from 2007. Rally Ireland 2006 will take place in the first half of next year and will be observed by the sport's governing body, the Federation International de l'Automobile (FIA). This will allow the FIA to consider Ireland's bid for the WRC.

The Editor of Motorsport News, Tim Bowdler, said: "We see Rally Ireland as the perfect partner event for Rally Wales GB. While we would never be able to influence the FIA's decision from a sporting perspective, we can show them how strong the public support is for this event. With the strength of Irish rallying, we're convinced that this can be a technically great event that grassroots fans will love and many UK fans will travel to. Our campaign is about conveying that message to the FIA."

Commenting on the "Go Ireland" campaign Rally Ireland Promoter Seán O'Connor said: "We're delighted to have the support of the voice of British Motorsport. Rally Ireland has been launched as a cross-border project in an effort to bring the motorsports community from all over the island together under the banner of this world championship event."

"We would ask all rally and sports fans from Cork to Antrim and from Derry to Wexford to get behind our bid as it would mean a lot to the country, both north and south of the border," Mr O'Connor concluded.
