old system - big trouble

    hi

I have an old PC, it was running windows 98 very poorly and I was unable to attach any modern devices to it (such as memory sticks). I was advised to upgrade it to windows 98 (SE) but unfortunately the system will not boot from the HDD now, it just goes to a blue screen.

The only way I can get it to boot is using a startup floppy disk which even though it tells me that it's WINDOWS 98 will only boot to a DOS type prompt. Now I'm not particularly interested in saving the PC but I would like to get some of the data onto some format wher I could load it onto a modern PC.

I can't write the data to the floppy drive as some of the files I am interested in getting at are video files taken with a digital camera and they're huge. Unfortunately I don't have a CD writer on the machine.

Can anybody think of a way of downloading the large files from the DOS prompt, is there anything I could buy to attach to the machine to write the files onto? or is there any way of uninstalling the 98 sE upgrade - I know this is a longshot but I thought I'd try anyway.

You could just stick the hardrive in another pc and copy the files across to another harddrive?

you could remove the hard drive and add it to a second PC and jsut copy the files off it.

Look at that! Great minds think alike, and at the same time too! ;-)

slave the drive in another machine or put in a USB external case and then copy and paste what you need off it and back up up onto cd from the other PC

Can do it for a fee , but I'm sure there plenty of people that will do it for free here on boards that have more time on their hands than me

google for a DOS disk with ASPI\USB device drivers. Such drivers exist and work quite well.

    actually: http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm

superb, I ask a question at twenty past eleven and I've had 5 replies by ten past twelve, I love this board.

Thanks everybody, I'll probably need an adult's help with this but you've given me plenty of choice for starting places

my favourite and most convenient is the DOS USB thingy, so I'll start there first
