    Bus Éireann Statement

Wednesday October 26th – Bus Éireann received a letter from the Director of Public Prosecutions at 16.13 today, Wednesday Oct 26th. The letter requests that the publication of the report of the independent Board of Inquiry set up to investigate the cause of the Navan Bus tragedy of May 23rd 2005 be deferred until the Office of the DPP has concluded its deliberations.

Bus Éireann will comply with this request and as a result the report will not be available until a future date.

It had been Bus Éireann’s intention to publish the report on Thursday October 27th, after copies of the report had been provided to the bereaved families and to the families of the other students involved in the accident.

The presentation of the report by Mr Jim McHugh, Chairman of the Board of Inquiry, to the Board of Bus Éireann was underway when a letter from the Director of Public Prosecutions was faxed to Bus Éireann asking the Company to defer publication. Bus Éireann had written to the DPP on Friday October 21st after the Board of Inquiry received legal advice that the DPP be advised in advance of the report’s publication.

Bus Éireann has contacted the bereaved families and the families of the other students involved in the tragic accident to privately communicate this development to them.

In the meantime Bus Éireann will continue to provide support to those affected by the tragedy.
