Yes-- they disguise themselves in buckets of fake tan - there called D4's

"Aliens" must exist. Have a read of "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson and you'll agree I'm sure.

I really dislike the term "aliens" though, much prefer the term "life" or "life-forms".

When the aliens come invading our planet, killing everything in sight in a couple of years ask that questions again.

I believe there's life outside of the planet (angels, demons, God, Satan), but I don't think there are "creepy" aliens like in the movies who want to come and take over the world? I don't know... I've never seen anything to make me believe that....

Yep, it'd be incredibly naive and arrogant of someone to assume otherwise, with the billions of planets in the universe.

I would tend to agree due to the sheer magnitude of chances.

Like MrJoe said...."Alien" wouldn't be the best term, it has become synominous with the little scary monster figures through sci-fi

Life forms yes. I'd say they exist somewhere out there...quite possibly another human-like race (unlikely) or something even as simple as micro-organisms

    oh, Aliens exist alright.
We even have "The Aliens Act 1935" in our statue book

Does anyone think the actually crashed in Roswell, New Mexico? There have been hundreds of sightings of bright colourfull lights dancing about the sky after reports of an alien autopsy were aired.

Of course - just look up at the sky during the night, see those little bright things? That's actually an alien armada coming to wipe us out.

I am not sure if I believe in aliens or not... but I really really hope
they are real as I want to be the first person to discover them. Finally something to make my mother proud of Pighead

I very much believe in them.
After reading some of those equations in books like A Short History... it's hard not to.
But what they're actually like, there's a different kettle of fish altogether. I bet you theyre of a form so bizarre that our puny brains will explode at the very sight of them. And vice versa....

That would leave some mess! Sounds like something from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy! Another classic book on this topic.

Is there not a paranormal forum.....
If aliens are real life creatures and they if they do exist then I would hardly call it paranormal. This would probably belong more in the skeptics forum or the science forum. Either way, we're not debating whether aliens exist, just asking people whether or not they believe which would be suited best to After Hours. :)

agreed. I do also believe that there is more out there than meets the eye.

"Aliens" is such a vague expression. Being a non-native can be alienating enough at times.

Question is: Would we be willing to learn from others and would we be able to share.

Perhaps because it's jumping to an extreme conclusion without any facts?

I mean sure there is a possibility that somewhere in the vastness of space there is alien life, but that's no reason to say you believe for sure that aliens exist. But there is also a possibility that I could have a brain tumor but I'm not going to believe I have a brain tumor based on no facts whatsoever.

    Aliens.

Even with our current technology we could eventually build generation ships that could travel to the stars. Even if it took 1000's of years to get there we could still colonise the entire galaxy within a few million years if each colony sent ships onwards. So it's safe to assume that either our planet is in quarantine (yeah right) or that no civilisation has reached our level in our galaxy prior to 10 million years ago. That's 0.25% of the time there has been life on this planet.

If you work out from first principles how big a universe needs to be to support intelligent life ( planets with liquid water etc. from supernove ) you get something that looks like what we have - life could not have formed much earlier because the elements come from the inside of the first stars. Also the large size is needed for gravity to stop the universe expanding too fast.

Lifeforms don't have to be carbon based and you are only factoring in one galwaxy.Plus maybe they went one of the other possible directions if they were in our galaxy?
Then again maybe 'people' could have been wiped out on various planets due to disasters.Maybe they just aren't interested in travelling.Who teh fook wants to be on a generation ship.
Or maybe it's star trek stylee with the prime directivve to not interfer?
Anyway I don't care if there is or not, doesn't affect me....yet.

    Life exists elsewhere? Yes.

Intelligent life, fairly unlikely. Not impossible but unlikely.

Consider that 99.9% of species on earth since it was created are extinct and to the best of our knowledge we are the only "intelligent" form of life to ever exist on the planet only because (roughly quoting this from "A Short History"), "Our ancestors always managed to slip through a multitude of closing doors in time".

We as intelligent humans are a fluke.

So yeah, life exists elsewhere in the universe, just probably not too much intelligent life.

But think about it. What if we are all alone. Or worse we re the most advanced race in the universe! Not been arrogant, just think its scary to think that there s no one coming to help us

Once spoke to a Jesuit priest on that very topic. He said we would be very ignorant to believe that earth was the only planet that God had gifted life too. He was quite an open minded fella.

Personally I believe there has to be other life out there. Weather that means we have actually being visited I'm not entirely sure.

Yes, but what about the Gelgameks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

Can't believe 7 people voted no!! Sorry, but in my opinion, not only is that very closed minded (yes I'm aware ye may say it's very closed minded of me to think there must be Aliens) but also very scientifically/mathematically wrong.
It's very simple. There are millions and billions of galaxys out there with millions of stars in each. Each star most likely has a solar system of it's own. To think that WE are the only planet in the entire universe capable of supporting life is ridiculous and a bit ignorant. FFS, Mars supported life too back in the day before Earth got it's act together. That's TWO planets in one solar system that supported life. Of course there are other planets out there with life on it. I don't even see how you can argue against this.
Personally, I think that their are millions of other planets out there capable of supporting life. I don't think we'll ever meet Aliens in my lifetime though. Maybe we never will. Galaxies are moving away from each other which makes travel between them even more difficult. Basically, we'd need a faster than light propulsion system to have any hope of ever meeting other intelligent life. Which sucks, coz I have no idea if that's even possible.

I believe that there is another form of life independant from this planet somewhere in the Universe. It's probably just a particularly green moss though, so I don't think about the possibility too much.

I can't see this planet as being the only one in the entire Universe with life. Of course, it's entirely possible that we might be completely alone in the Universe, and that thought depresses me. :(
