What exactly does a labourer do??

    Hello,

A friend of mine is considering doing some labouring work (on building sites, etc.)

Could any of you tell me what a labourer does?

Is it simply sweeping up, moving bricks? Does someone give the labourer orders or does the labourer just use his initiative and clean up around the place?

Any insights from ex-labourers greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

They do whatever they are told to do.

Did it once. Was a general dogsbody. I had to do as I was told.

Tis grand really. Time passes quickly when you are working hard. It's not light or easy work though. I wouldn't go into it carrying any back injuries for example ;)

    Thanks for the replies.

Do you need to be strong or fit?

Being strong helps. It is manual labour after all.

You'd get strong fast if you weren't anyways ;)

You need a safe pass to work as a labourer right?

Safepass. Yes. You could be doing anything. Yes. You need to be fit and strong. You might have to keep up with some other guys who've been doing it for years. I remember once starting on a site, after finishing my college term, and I was meant to be one of two guys working with two brickies. The other labourer didn't turn up, and the lift carrying stuff to the 1st floor broke. After a week I was shattered. After two weeks I'd worked through the pain barrier, and after 3 weeks I was fit as an ox. I always liked to have a decent set of boots and gloves when I was working. Mind you it was many years ago when I did it.
