If i have a computer that is sending out on mail1.eircom.net and i tell the router to pick up all info that is going out on mail1.eircom.net or port 25 and reroot it ot tempmail.dit.ie would that work?

i.e. force traffic on port 25 to another ip?

Just FYI, it's "through", not "threw". They mean different things. :)

What you're suggesting is technically possible (though not through your router methinks) but probably not optimal.

Could you just edit the settings in your mail program?

could you not use heanet's smtp server? generally ISP's don't let another ISP's user to use their server

Well i have a lot of personal computer with people who bring there computers home and would need to change settings back and forth each time they connect at home and connect at school. So this is not best way of doing this.

    right on the button.

you will only be able to send mail 'through' ;) eircom's mail server IF you have an eircom IP address or are with an ISP that eircom has on it's 'safe' list, which isn't very many.

this is a security measure put in place by eircom (and most other ISP's for that matter) to prevent people who aren't their customers from using their mail servers.

if you're using an ISP other than eircom.net you are very unlikely to be able to send mail on their servers, simple as that.

you might find a program that will allow a user to set up different location profiles so that for one location (home) they use 1 set of settings and at another location (heanet) they use another.

My IBM laptop comes with ThinkVantage connetions prog that allows me to use different proxy settings etc according to my location. I think there's a prob called Netmon or something that does the same...

or depending on the mail client two profiles.

you could also look at having one account forward to the other if either support server side rules. (we do that for many of our off site users)

But if you are on someones site, it's their rules as to what they allow - could you ask them what the options are ?
