Howdy, was just wonderin if anyone could suggest a solution to a lil problem...

I've roughly 9gb of wma and mp3 files loose in a folder on my computer. About 98% of the tracks have info like artist, album etc on their tags. Does anyone know how i could organise the tracks into subfolders by artist? Was hoping to avoid doing it manually :P

I'm sure there is software out there somewhere. I managed my loose files by copying them to my ipod and then using ehpod to copy them all back, it automatically creates the artist folder etc...

My creative zen software did the same. I'm sure any mp3 player software will work

I would highly recommend The Godfather. I used it to sort out my MP3 mess. Took a while for me the configuration sorted out but it works great plus if you are missing any details you can do a search in the CDDB and even add folder images from Amazon. Just need to be a little patient at the start.

If you ask iTunes nicely (ie. tick a box somewhere during installation about allowing iTunes to organise your tunes) it puts things in order quite well, no need to copy across to an iPod (so handy if you don't have one!)

Do not use iTunes to organise your music unless all your music is properly tagged....repeat.....do not use iTunes to organise your music unless it's properly tagged.
The last 2% you mention will get put in "unknown artist\unknown album". I started ripping life without cddb access, so my tunes were all organised by directory <artist>\<album>\track0-9.mp3, etc. iTunes destroyed my collection.

Godfather's been mentioned a few times on similar threads here before. Good luck.

I use tagscanner, it's completely free and very easy to use.

Go into Music Renamer tab, paste this:
    %1\%3\%7 - %2
into the format, find your folder and when it scans the folder and is ready, click generate, wait for it and your mp3s will be sorted into folders based on their ID3 tags. The above format will give you:

    Artist\Album\Track Number - Track Name.mp3

Also, if you are ever manually numbering album tracks, always use "01 - title" instead of "1 - title" as if you don't it will appear as:
    1 - track one
    10 - track 10
    11 - track 11

    instead of

    01 - track 1
    02 - track 2
    03 - track 3

    :)

I have been using mediamonkey for a couple of years and am pleased with it.

Thanks, I'll porbably give godfather a try first tonight and see how that goes. I really badly need to get this done, working with my music folder is just ridiculous as it is.

I think I tried Godfather (it sounds familiar anyway) when I was first choosing a tag tool and I can't remember it exactly but I know tagscanner was the best of the lot I tried.

You can download tagscanner here or here:)
