Trouble with warranty

I bought an archos mp3 player off archos.com last year, september 2004. It cost me the best part of e430 once shipping fees and taxes were added. Its a french company.

Heres my problem. My mp3 stopped working about 6 weeks ago, septemer 2005. Nearly a year to the day since I bought it online. In order to return a good to be repaired you have to wait about a week for them to email you with a product return code, once acquired you send the parcel off to them.
According to their website, their warranty only covers products for up to a year
    http://archos.com/support/warranty_info.html?sid=j223y2jobyc34yybjfy44o
Archos warrants to the end user customer that Archos products will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the duration of one year, which begins on the date of purchase by the customer. Customer is responsible for maintaining proof of date of purchase.

When I had reported my problem to them my mp3 player was still in warranty, by one day. But by the time I received my product return code and the parcel reached them in france it was 3 weeks out of warranty.

I was hoping they would allow for the time it took them to issue me the return code and for the mp3 player to reach them, but no. I received an email saying it would cost e210 to repair the mp3 player because it is out of warranty. Which is ****ing ridiculous because you can buy my mp3 player for e300 brand new now.

For the last couple of weeks we've been sending emails back and fort, me complaining how it was in warranty when I reported it, and they're saying they'll only repair it if I pay for it because it was out of warranty when they received it. I rang a few times but got cut off because I was on hold so long.

I had kind of given up on the whole situation and asked them to return the mp3 player to me. When today I found the receipt archos emailed me last year when I bought it. I noticed under the heading Conditions it states that the warranty is 2 years from the invoice date, which would mean my warranty is not up until september 2006. This contradicts what they have been telling me for the last few weeks.

    C o n d i t i o n s
DELIVERY: Colissimo - Delivery in 5 days
    PAYMENT: Credit card before shipment
WARRANTY 2 YEARS starting invoice date: please register your product on our website (www.archos.com).
We draw your attention on general sales conditions on the back.

So where do I go from here? Their site states that they only give a one year warranty but on my receipt it says that the warranty is two years.

    Thanks

I'd think the answer is kindof simple...
Scan the receipt and email it to them.

Did you receive your return authorisation before the year was up? If you did and you sent the item back to then as quickly as anyone could be reasonably could then you should be covered. It's only fair. Afterall when you would have purchased the product the warranty would have commenced before you received it.

Did the 2 year warranty require registration on the web site? This may have been a condition. You should have a one year warranty automatically but the manufacturer can insist on registration of the product for an extended warranty (though given that they sold it directly you to they should have all your details).
