Money matters, in college??

I go to college but dont get a grant. Now my parents give me money, and pay my rent but having not enough for recreational time pisses me off.

I can go out a couple of times during the week and buy food, so you might say I'm comfortable and I probably am, buy Id love to have "extra" just so I could buy things and go out at weekends.

I am currently looking for a job and have often thought it would be great to have one full time, but that's not going to happen until I finish my course.

It would also make me feel more independent.

So anyway does anyone have any other ideas on getting money like extra grants or whatever. I'm not going to take out a loan as Id have to pay it back.

Keep searching for the aul job. If however you get the job, it will more than likely take up a lot of your free time.

Yeah, definitely. If I have job that may stop the boredom and make me more independent. The money will just allow me to buy and do stuff I like :p

depends on the job. last year i had a job in a small shop. easiest work in the world. worked mainly weekends and one evening during the week. each shift took up about 4-5 hours which is nothing.

Id finish college and have dinner watch a bit of tv and head to work for a few hours and be back home for about 10-11 at the latest in the evening.

Had about an extra €100 a week not much but have me that extra bit if cash to throw around. I didnt have to be counting the pennies at the end of the week to get a bar or drink.

At the moment im working in a night club, alot harder work than the shop and making about 130 a week.

I like the work but it does drain your energy for the following day.

If you want a job get one that will suit your time schedule and the amount of money you actually want.

No point in working your ass off for a big pay check and then having no time to your self.

Real life is hard going isn't it! Wait till you're not getting an money from your parents.

Working in Security is always a good job... not retail security though.

    Money saving tips:

Cut boozing costs by starting your own still...you could in fact supplement your income by selling on any surplus to fellow students.

Eating should be considered a luxury on days with a "U" in their name.

If you're a smoker, there's plenty of cheap tobacco to be had by hanging around the front doors of pubs at closing time....simply grab as many fag-ends as you can carry and fill your tobacco pouch.

Rent? All the smart students know squatting is where it's at.

Mobile phone bills/credit are an unecessary drain on your income....bin your phone and ask santa for two empty yoghurt pots and a sh*tload of string.

Oh, last thing....cars are a money pit.
The first unlocked bike you happen upon should be seen as a gift from the gods, and treated as such. Keep pedalling and if anyone shouts "Hey that's my f*ckin' bike" DO NOT turn around; just keep pedalling.

I work in a clothes shop two evenings(3-4 hour shifts) and saturday(10-7/8) and sunday every week. The latest I'm ever out is 9.
    I get paid roughly €230-€250 a week for it :D and I don't have a single expense, it's all disposable...ohh yeahhh

Maybe you could teach grinds for LC students in your subject.

I used to do security (industrial) work on weekends when i was in college, it was great. I had two 12 hour shifts every weekend, and was getting €7.80/hr at the time. They give extra money for working nights and stuff like that.
Had to give up working for the final year of my degree though, there was no way I could pass it and have the time for work.

I work 16-20 hours a week in a shop, get paid just under 9 euro an hour and time and a half on Sunday. I earn about 160 euro a week, but 80 of that goes on my loan repayment for my fees... Put it this way: I don't have enough money to milk my staff discount properly! :(

ah i long to earn more than 7.65 an hr, and the thought of TIME AND A HALF!! Luxury :p

I'm doing the same as you, in kilkenny as well weird! moneys a bit better, but the hours are a killer. Have no weekend at all, in work from 8 till 8 saturday and sunday but need the money! so has to be done!

Just drink cheap beer, saves a few euro!

I'm in 4th year college, don't get a grant and have to pay my own rent etc. and supplement myself so your life ain't all that bad.

I'm living in Sligo which does help though. An average night out only costs me about €30 because you can walk everywhere and a vodka is only €2.50 in most of the pubs.

Pints are only about €3.70 which is cheap compared to the Dublin prices I'm used to but I usually drink in the house before I go out. That's another college trick you should take up to save money.

I work 19 hours a week, 5-9 Friday, 9-6 Saturday and Sunday 11-6. I'm planning to drop the Sundays after Christmas but I worked all Summer to save up the money to do that.

Things aren't so bad this year though because I only have 2 hours of college on a Monday and 1 on a Friday (which I've only seen once in 6 weeks).

You'd be best off getting a job. I've worked anything from 19-24 hours through the last three years, and I don't think its hampered my performance. The way I look at it is that if you weren't working you'd just be lieing around dossing. Like myself, most people can't motivate themselves to work at college or study until the pressure is on!

i'm 2nd year living at home avec parents, so i'm not shelling out on food or mad rent... but any little luxuries i need i can afford with my job on the weekends (was working during the week getting loads of extra cash but can't do that now with college actually requiring work now)

one way to do it is to live on the bare minimum until christmas, then work like a bitch in hmv and save that cash until the next semester when you'll use that money to live... then do the same in the summer.

Im living at home and in 2nd year of college. I quit my summer job because of a b*tch of a manager and was about to go looking for another for some weekend work when I was approved for a 900 euro grant :D

That'll keep me going nicely for a while I think ;)
