Hi, could anyone shed some light on the topic of marketing please.

Basically, I'm a business studies graduate of 2004, this course was heavily orientated around marketing with various marketing modules from market research, strategic marketing etc. Because of this, graduates from this course are eligible to take the Marketing Institute of Ireland exam (unsure exactly what this is or what benefits it would have)

I have 18 months or so office admin work experience. However I would like to get into marketing in some way, shape or form. So presumable, I should look for jobs as a marketing assistant or marketing administrator right???

I'm unsure what the possibilites are later on in marketing, but I would one day possible like to get into something such as brand management, project management or even strategic management.

Any help would be great, even better would be a job

ps. I live in North County Dublin, so ideally city centre positions though, I am thinking of moving to London sometime in the new year as I feel there would be more opportunities over there

The MII entry exam is well worth doing as it gains you entry into the professional representative body for marketing professionals in Ireland so its invaluable in terms of contacts, job opportunities and for your CV..

Also for a starting position take a look at www.ibec.ie/eop ... This is a brilliant programme for ppl such as yourself starting out and one i can recommened.. Its a very well recognised graduate programme and can open alot of doors for you, also gain great experience working abroad..
    Hope this helps..

Hey, the main piece of advice I could give to you is draw up an excellent cover letter, and then personalise this for every single company you send it to. A cover letter can make or break you, I have managed to land a job that people with more experience couldn't land and I believe the reason for this is because I really sold myself in my cover letter.

I would also suggest you get yourself some sales experience. This kind of work is not hard to come by. I worked in the ad sales department for an event guide magazine for about 2months before I got the job I have now. Sales is not fun, its hard work, but you learn alot! The experience is invaluable and I doubt I would be in this job without the sales experience.

Finally, I would suggest that you keep applying and when interviewing it is essential that you sound confident in your own ability.

I am marketing manager for an I.T company, yet my qualifications are in journalism, media production and radio broadcasting, and finally, a degree in media production and media management. Although marketing featured in all of the courses, I do not have a specific marketing qualification, you do, that should put you ahead of me on paper.

Thanks for the advice, I have an interview with a marketing agency in Dublin city centre tomorrow morning its only for a two month contract (November and December) but I don't mind. Its the type of position I'm seeking, I think. As I said, I'm thinking of moving to London in the New Year so its ideal for now and if I show good initiative maybe they'll ask to keep me on, fingers crossed.

Anyways, I'll keep you's posted whether I get it or not.

For all those interested, I had my interview with the marketing agency and after hearing what they had to say about the position and what the company was about I left feeling this was the job for me, I had the relevent experience and MS Office skills.

I had the interview at 9am Thursday 27th October and was told they would get back in touch within 36 hours (which just doesn't sound right). Anyways, they phoned back the next day saying that unfortunately they had decided to select someone else for the role however they were very impressed with what I had to say and how I conducted myself in the interview and that they would like to consider me for another position within the company should I be interested, which of course I was, as it was a full time position (I think) and a better position as I would have had more of an interest in it.

So they said that the HR department would get in touch sometime next week, to which I have yet to hear. I left it to Wednesday, saw the position advertised on the internet and decided to send them an email referring to the vacancy and told them I had an interview the previous week and that the interviewer had forwarded my details. The position has now been removed from the website.

I don't know what to make of the situation. Even though I never got the original position I still remained positive as they wished to consider me for the new position, but now that they haven't got in touch I'm feeling really p***ed off.

We have a Reception / Office Manger role going in our Marketing Consultancy at present. It might not put you at the cold face of Marketing but would certainly give you a full understanding of the Marketing industry. You can PM me for an email address & send me a cv if you or anyone else is interested.

Darke, theres not much point in pestering them about the job, they made a decision so you just have to accept it, better to leave it at that than risk alienating them..

Put it down to experience and move on

aye i've moved on. who said i was pestering them, all i did was send an email asking if they could get in touch, as thats what they said they would do.

all i'll say on the matter now, if it was my company i'd ensure that promises were kept. it doesnt give a good image of how the company is run. and yes, i am aware that, people are going to think that just because it was a trivial task doesnt necessarily mean the rest of the company is run the same way. but even so, ive put a black mark beside their name for now. who knows, maybe i'll come across them along the yellow brick road to glory.

anyways, still can't seem to find any decent marketing positions out there though. hopefully something comes up soon.

ps. thanks Smirky, have sent you a PM
