I'm thinking about going to a personal trainer and just wondering if anyone has ever done it? I play a lot of sports so i'm fairly fit but I really want to tone up... I go to the gym a fair bit but I feel like i'm not getting anywhere because i'm not 100% sure of what I should be doing. Anyway just looking for peoples past experiences.... Oh and are they expensive?

personal trainers vary realy widely in competence so try and get a personal recommendation for a good one. my trainer is fantastic, he pushes me hard enough that I know I'm giving it 100% but I don't hate him too much afterwards :p before i started working with him i was just farting around in the gym not really knowing what I was up to, but he showed me how to lift properly, advises me on diet and training schedules, and generally whoops my a$$ if I don't give it my all. I can honestly say I've seen a huge improvement since I started working with him. Unfortunately I'm in a college gym so only students and grads can use it! ut I'd definitely recommend finding a good trainer to show you the ropes, at least for the first while.

Yeah, my trainer is great too. PTs are great if you don't have a training partner. They can push you to get those extra few reps, and give the bar a touch up if you're struggling.

A good trainer will also be interested in diet, and will track your progress (weight, BF%, tape measurements) from week to week (or fortnight to fortnight), so you can see the progress you're making.

If you've got the money, then go for it. Like g'em says, though, try to receive a personal recommendation for a trainer....

What part of the country are you in?

I'm in Cork, just outside the City. Anybody have any recommendations from that area. I don't know anyone who's ever used a personal trainer so i'd find it really difficult to get a good recommendation. I think it's definitely what I need.

What experience level are you and what goals are you trying to achieve?

My two main goals are to tone up especially abs, arms and bum areas and I want to improve my cardiovascular fitness. I play a good bit of basketball every week but I feel like what i'm doing at the gym isn't improving my fitness. I'm at a certain level and I can't seem to get any higher than that even though I know i'm not at 100%.
