What are IP addresses?

I keep getting NAT errors, and apparently the way to get rid of these is to "forward a port" from my AirPort to the app I'm using.

But to do this, I have to enter an IP address in the AirPort Admin Utility (apparently). And also put the port address in the Public and/or Private fields in the utility.

At the moment, the IP address enters itself automatically. But what is it? And is it entering the right address?

An IP address is a large number that uniquely identifies a particular computer on a network. In this case it is probably the address that the Airport has given to your Mac automatically.

To find out your Mac's IP Address for sure, go into 'Network Preferences', double-click on 'Airport' in the network status list and then hit the 'TCP IP' tab. You should see IP Address of your Mac listed there.
