What do the 6 screws on the pickup actually do?

I screwed them in today and it made my Les sound much better!!

    Any1 any Ideas?

Ya know, that's something I never actually thought about. I know that they're supposed to be at 45degrees to the string, alternating every other string. At least, I think I know that.

the screws are the 'cores' of one side of the pickup. theres copper coil wrapped around each one. the adjustment is just to allow you to adjust string to string balance, ie moving the screw closer increases the output of the pickup for that particular string.

Are the screws not just screwed into the magnet on that side?

No. the screws are the polepieces on that side of the pickup
