Today, guinness are launching a new series of limited edition stouts. The first is called Brew 39, and it's basically the same as the stuff we know and love, but with the late addition of hops in the brewing process.
    Can't wait to try it!
    MMMmmmm

any ideas on where to get these limited edt beers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

300 pubs in Greater Dublin apparently. Saw a tap in Cullens Ballsbridge at the weekend. They;ll be changing the brew every 6 months, so you've got a good time to get sampling it...

Does anyone know if the new pint is available in any pubs in Rathfarnham? Going out tonight and wouldn't mind tasting it.

Cant find the list of pubs anywhere. I got a postcard from guinness about it with no info either, bit stupid really.

Yeah I've been looking for a list of pubs on the net now for a while. No joy so far. Hey kenmc you may remember me from such homebrew sites as ;) aka duvel. Anyway yeah I'm gonna skate around the city now and scope out some pubs to see if they have it for a taste test with the buddies in a couple hours. The very nice barman in Mahaffeys on pearse st. informed me that he'd never heard of it. I don't feel so bad now for my former ignorance considering that man's in the trade...

    Right

Found a pub that sells it: O' Neill's halfway down Pearse st. Just beside the trinity Inn.

It's gonna get a mighty critique-ing. Heard it's a womans drink, tastes much sweeter due to the lack of bitterness. But I'll reserve my own judgement.

    Hi Apex/Duvel,
yeah I know you from HomeBrewTalk all right, I think we've conversed on that too.
Ah ONeills was an old haunt of mine when i was in Trinity. Used do a good pint. Many the drunken wednesday after windsurfing fitness training in the gym! Parently they were doing a Brew39 promo in the Bleeding Horse last night. No good to me now of course!
So how did it taste? Will you drink it again? I guess the reason that Mahaffeys barman didn't know is cos they only giving it to selected pubs, so the rest wouldn't have too much info, and of course they're not going to be too informative of where else might be serving it cos they wanna keep your custom. I'd say that Mulligans would have it too, probably Keoghs, Davy Byrnes, McDaids,Flannerys....

Damn, if Jim hasn't heard of it, it mustn't be worth squat. Seriously, though, any other pubs than O'Neills sampling the stuff? I have a bit of a dislike of the place after they charged me €7.90 for 12yr Jameson. I'll have a scout about myself to see if I can't find any, and bring back the results. Looking forward to it, as for years I've been a drinker of the black stuff, but lately, after a foray into some slightly more exotic tipple, it has slightly lost it's novelty to me. Hopefully the new brew will either taste so good that I won't touch anything else, or so bad as to fill me with a nostalgia for good old regular Guinness.

Russells have it in Ranelagh. Quite liked it, definitely lighter, tasts a bit "airier" for want of a better description. Hoppier taste, less bitter. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, but I would drink it again. Definitely trying to get new drinkers on board I think

Guinness' problem has always been it's shrinking demiographic, they have to really pull out all the stops in regards to advertising to capture the younger (18-35) drinker.

Bringing out a 'premium' product is quite a good idea, but I doubt it will help the brand much in the long-term.

They have it in synnots off grafton street - had a sampler and wasnt impressed, tasted like the porterhouse brewed stout, "plain" i think its called. Much prefer standard guinness.
If guinness want to get younger ppl drinking more guinness then they should have promotions in college bars not bring out new versions of guinness, probably the only ppl trying brew 39 are already guinness drinkers anyway.

ffs i know it's "limited edition" but could they not have done 300 pubs around the country instead of just Dublin?

This is only the first of 10 new limited edition brews they're gonna bring out every 6 months over the next five years. The next one diageo hope to introduce to the whole country early next year..

Edit: Oh yeah I didn't really like it. It's definitely smoother but IMHO has lost a lot of character when compared with regular guinness. And the aftertaste is stronger and longer lasting. I'm not fond of it, won't have it again. ie when I'm drinking guinness again it will be the regular one. Of course I'll try their next brew when it comes out..

the long stone beside the screen as it too. i tried it on friday night, i'm female and i have to say i prefer the normal stuff.

brew 39 is abit tasteless although it as the exact same consistency.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,588 ✭✭✭Bluetonic

Was drinking this all day yesterday, and after a heavy Friday and Saturday on the beer found it much easier on the stomach.

    Nice and light.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,111 ✭✭✭joker77

Drank it in MacTurcaills on Thursday night, after about 3 regular Guinness. Didn't think there were was a huge difference, but my palate had been coloured! Wasn't too gone on it.

Drank a pint as the first pint in Smyths in Ranelagh on Saturday night, definitely don't like it. Lingering kind of after-taste, yes it's a bit lighter but don't like the flavour. Won't be going for it again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

It is in a lot of the pubs in dalkey. Had it and it was acceptable, less bitter like beamish. I heard they are selling lots of the stuff. Lots of people just trying it out but not sticking to it. New guinness glasses out for the collectors amonst you.

Was in the Thing Mote (O'Donoghues or whatever it's called nowadays) the day it came out...

Sold out within hours so I didn't get to try it...

Love normal Guinness so I'd like to try this stuff...

    hi,

they should just stick to the original guinness. this new 39 brew is way too sweet and people who can't drink guinness the weay it is shouldnt be drinking guinness at all!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,297 ✭✭✭Ron DMC

I like it, sweeter than you're average guinness.
Heard a rumour that it's aimed at girls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,258 ✭✭✭Ag marbh

I think they are really trying to market it for the 18-25 consumer

Well, for what it's worth the "original" guinness is no longer available. it was brewed back in 1759, and has gone through many changes since then, most recently when they started using a nitrogen/co2 mix to pump it.
If everyone had your attitude, we'd be stuck in the middle ages. Do you drink pint bottles of Guinness, like gets put into the Christmas Pudding? If you can't drink that, then you shouldn't be drinking Guinness at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,114 ✭✭✭noby

    Spot on Ken.
And even the pint bottles aren't bottle conditioned now. They also make "essence of Guinness" which is shipped to all the breweries to add to their beer. They also add 'hop extract' instead of hops.
It's constantly evolving. It's called business.

Brew39 and the rest that will follow is a clever marketing ploy. If it takes off - keep it; if it flops - drop it after the 6 months, and try the next one.

Am I the only one here who remembers when Guinness last messed around with their brew? How many of you remember Guinness Light? It was on the market for about a year in the late 70's before it was withdrawn as an unmitigated disaster. Apparently the Yanks demanded a Light variety and then when the calorie reduced version became available refused to drink it. Can't say I blame them. Other varieties of Guinness that have fallen by the wayside over the years include: Guinness's Brite Lager, Guinness's Brite Ale, Guinness Light, Guinness XXX Extra Strong Stout, Guinness Cream Stout, Guinness Gold and Guinness Special Light.

Tried it last night... wasn't too impressed...

I'm sure I'd get used to it but I just plain don't want to...

What about Breo? and extra cold?

On any 'official' Guinness website, it's like the ones you've mentioned have all been deleted from history. I wonder will it be the same for this one?

This one of ten they're bringing out every 6 months for 6 months over the next 5 years..

IMHO it's (well obviously) a marketing ploy to attract attention. Then they're gonna take which ever one people responded best to flavourwise and on the sly change regular guinness to that brand

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,114 ✭✭✭noby

I don't think they'll replace regular guinness with a new one as blatantly as that. But it does allow them the opportunity to extend the run of any popular beers in this 'experiment' with a view to creating a long term alternative product. At least it gives us the chance to taste a few different variations (as soon as the next one is rolled out nationwide, that is)

Agreed. I'd love to see them make:

    Vanilla Cream Stout
    Imperial Stout
    Oatmeal Stout
    Chocolate Stout

Just discovered a friend of mine helped design Brew 39, can't wait to try it now at the boards beers :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 724 ✭✭✭ubu

I found it lighter and contrary to others here there was less of an aftertaste, it was nice and ill be drinking it again in the future.

The first time i ordered it, the barman left it to settle and another barman topped it up with regular Guinness, as i hadnt ordered it before i thought this was what was done, turned out the barman didnt realise it was the other stuff!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,466 ✭✭✭Blisterman

I wonder if any of these will become permenant additions to the guinness brand. It'll be interesting to try them all.

Hmm, I did some Market Research a few months back on this concept. I think fair play to Guinness for doing this.

Does anyone want to keep me a pint of this Brew39 until I arrive back on the emerald shores?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

I tried the Brew 39 about a week ago. It tastes spookily similar to half a pint of miller bunged in on top of half a pint of guiness.
Anyway, it's not a bad taste, goes down easy but still has that distinctive taste. It does look like it was set to bring in the young drinkers.

Tried a couple of pints of this stuff in Kilmacud on Wednesday. Reminded me of the "Pint of Plain" from the Porterhouse. No normal slightly fishy taste that one associates with Guinness, and no smokey bitter opening - instead it tastes more watery at first, and leaves a metallic aftertang (bad). But somehow it all comes together, you stop noticing the aftertang and it's not a bad pint at all.....

    I'd try it again.

Looking forward to the rest of the series....

    As per Newstalk 106 yesterday.
Guinness are launching a nationwide search for 10 Guinness drinkers to form the Guinness Brewhouse Series Tasting Panel. The Panel will be invited to taste a variety of different Guinness stouts and helping to decide which ones should be developed as part of the Guinness Brewhouse Series.

The next stout in the Guinness Brewhouse Series is scheduled to launch in summer 2006 and Guinness is keen to recruit the real experts, Guinness drinkers, to help them decide which Guinness stouts to bring to market. This unique opportunity is open to all Guinness drinkers over 18 years old and will involve a private tour of the St. James’s Gate Brewery, sensory training with the Guinness Master Brewer and, of course, tasting a variety of Guinness stout recipes. The Tasting Panel will also receive commemorative certificates, marking their honorary role and important contribution to the Guinness Brewhouse Series

Those interested in applying for this once-in-a-lifetime experience are asked to email tastingpanel@ogilvy.com with their name, address, date of birth, contact phone number and explain, in 30 words or less, why they should be chosen to join the Guinness Brewhouse Series Tasting Panel. The competition will be open until Friday, 27 January and following an initial vetting process of all applications, auditions will take place in the Guinness Storehouse with potential candidates to decide the final ten.
