which camera would you prefer for outdoor action shooting(close range)?

    d70s 80-200 F2.8D
    350d 70-200 2.8L (non IS)

i was playing with D70 for few days and was really fast.

anybody with 350 and taking action pictures?

a friend of mine is taking photos for car magazine's and he uses a 350D so they can definately handle action shots

I'd go with the Canon - Nikon are way behind the times with the D70s.

I'd read some reviews on www.dpreview.com first, if I was you.

Don't forget the Nikon D50 as well (which is cheaper than the D70s)

The 350D and the F4L would be fine for outdoor sports. You don't need to 2.8 unless you're shooting in very low light levels.

the 2.8 would give you faster shutter speeds and better background blur. if your budget can stretch, i'd definitely go for the f2.8

IS would also be a distinct advantage if your budget has no limits. I spent months deciding if I should go for the 70-200 f2.8 IS or the 100-400 IS, I ended up with the latter as I primarily shoot on the long end in any case. The former may be better if this range suits you more plus you can stick on a TC and get that extra reach if desired....but do consider IS if you can. It means you can take far more ad-hoc hand-held long shots without the need for tripods or monopods etc.

Unfortunately i can't go for IS lens , don't have that much money and can buy used 2.8L for good money

There's also the Sigma 70-200 2.8. I have it and am very happy with it.

Have a look here for some examlpe shots. The lens details are with each photo.

Any idea what its like with a 1.4x or 2x TC on it?

This was taken with a 2x TC. Not the best example I know, it's a bit small and I hadn't the same experience with PS then. I haven't used the 2x much because you really need a tripod unless you bump up the iso.

Once you are post processing and you know how to sharpen effectively you will get good results with most lenses I think, though I would like a couple of L lenses ;)

    well... we'd all like L's :D

from reading various reviews looks like 1.4x is the choice of many

Care to elaborate what's so much better about Canon than Nikon or the rest of the competition?
