Well there's a new kid on the block...

'Alessandro Zarelli joined Lisburn Distillery at the beginning of this year in what officials believed was an international loan scheme, involving top clubs Steaua Bucharest and Sporting Lisbon.

'The 20-year-old came with an impressive CV, stating he had played for big name outfits Glasgow Rangers, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday.

'But alarm bells began to sound when after a few weeks avoiding practice sessions in Lisburn, Zarelli proved a disaster on the pitch and left under a cloud, having run up hundreds of pounds in bills.

'A man claiming to be an Italian FA chief, Matteo Colobase, contacted Distillery to arrange the transfer and said it would pay the club almost £1,000 for putting the young footballer up.

'The money was never paid and contact from the Irish League side has been ignored since Zarelli's departure.

"He was rubbish," said manager Paul Kirk. "Even in training he couldn't play."'

Kirk said Distillery were relatively lucky not to have incurred substantial losses over the affair and he called for a probe before other clubs are stung.

From where he went to -

'Football bosses in Rome last night washed their hands of an Italian "soccer star" said to have conned his way across North Wales.

‘Left-sided midfielder Alessandro Zarelli allegedly moved from club to club leaving a trail of debts behind him.

The 22-year-old turned up at Bangor City supposedly armed with paperwork from the Italian FA, but was later shown the door by manager Peter Davenport who checked out the "con-man's" footballing credentials.'

Whoever next? Watch out the Eircom League I say!

I particularly like some of the quotes from here:

"He arrived here with a broken nose, so he never actually played for Bangor."
    - I wonder why he had a broken nose!

"If he was such a good player, I asked him, why wasn't he playing in Italy?"
    - Brilliant.

"John Deakin, secretary of the Welsh Premier League, has warned all clubs to be wary of any approach which seemed 'too good to be true.'"
    - Sound advice.

The poor old Distillery fans were duped
