I am trying to install a kids game that runs on 256 colors, the game will only run on this.I got this on windows help.

To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.

On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
    Click the Compatibility tab.
Select the Run in 256 colors check box

My problem is the game will not even open for me to install it so I cannot do the above.

    Any advice.

Boot into safe mode, and see if you can change as low as 256 colors there (Right-click on Blank space on Desktop -> Properties -> Settings..), then install with any luck - then do the above. Return to normal mode...
dunno if it'll work.. what game is it?:)

Make sure your PC is not too fast fr the game. Example: the game wants 256 colours + Windows 98, whereas you may have Windows XP. Ensure you have "Windows 98 compatibility" if this is the case.

Thanks for your help lads I managed to finger it out.For future reference here is how I did it.

I used the Program Compatibility Wizard on Xp,then clicked "I want to use the program in the CD rom".Then in the Compatibility Mode you can change the settings to the required 640 x 480 and 256 colours.

    Thanks again for your help.
