have a pc at home about 4 years old and got pc133 512 mb sd-ram for it,but now will not boot with it installed.only cost 32 euro and can sell it on to a friend who fixes pc's if it works for him.its the right spec ram and have tried all bios settings ,but no joy.have 256 in pc already and takes 1 gig in total.i knew it was a risk buying it so,
should i just try and sell it on or is there anything else i can try?

are you 100% sure it'sd the correct RAM.

I've watched seasoned admin trick around with #RAM# only to find they didn't get teh correct aprity on the RAM hence machine won't boot.

www.crucial.com for the easies was to decide if you have the correct RAM.

    If correct RAM,
Next have you loaded it in correctly. Put the larger of the RMA chips in slot one, smaller in slot two is the usual way.

again you should get everything you need on the crucial site. Check first there, get back here,

Try the new stick on it's own?
The original 256 might not be compatible with the new memory.

By saying 'The pc won't boot now' - I take it that it previously did? (With the old ram?). ok remove the 'New' ram and see if the pc will boot - it should.

What your probably doing is just installing the new stick to the spare second slot. and what you should do is swap the older stick of ram to the spare slot and put the new stick in the first slot. Some of the older comps prefer this config the 'higher' value first then the lower (Old) value in the secondary slot.
i.e. 512k first then the old 256 stick in the secondary slot.

If that doesn't work (It should) then the new stick is probably borked and needs replacing. It happens - I'll get 2-3 sticks dodgy out of every ten I order.

**Make sure you follow correct 'Anti-Static' procedures before handling or inserting ram as not doing will damge a new stick and/or the old stick**.

the ram i got is correct alright.i tried every combination of memory in the two slots but no luck.when i put the new ram in on its own ,the pc just show a blank screen when it should be booting up xp.while if i mix the two the xp logo comes up as if all is fine, then crashes, see glimpse of blue screen, but no time to read it.when i first put new ram in ,unmountable boot error (googled this with reference to ram,but no joy)blue screen appeared and had to fix with chkdsk /r ,even to get original ram to boot again.i would imagine the blue screen is saying the same thing.how can i check the windows log to check the error? now i do not need to use chkdsk /r to repair xp even after trying to boot with new ram.

I'm currently experiencing the exact same prob as you. (Same symptons). turns out that while I was sent the correct module for my laptop, it has to be made with Samsung chips and not Infineon ones. Its got the same specs on sheet, but apparantly the brand of chip makes all the difference.

So check with supplier that you indeed have the correct module. If they say you do then RMA it.

If you were getting "Unmountable Boot Error" or something similar then the problem could well be your harddrive as I just had this very problem with my Dad's computer and had to replace the HDD. Once I did that everything was fine. Is your drive making a lot of noise??

xp should just reconise the new config straight away and re-configure to the new ram.
how can i check the windows log to check the error?

    Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/System Tools/Event Viewer/System

The 'Unmountable Boot Error' is more than likely the bios battery failing (You say the machine is 4 years old?) - the battery will cause that fault.

As for the ram - is it booting without problem on the old stick? Or are you having to chkdisk/r?

If it is I'd definately be looking at the bios battery at that stage...

boots fine with old ram installed on its own.i have lastest bios from 2002 for the motherboard, gigabyte ga-7zmmh.i doubt they will release another one.going to give to friend over the weeken and see if it works for him.i had to install xp again a few months back and it ended up being installed on the f-drive ,as pc has 2 hdd.could this cause any problem.my c drive is now the extra drive on the pc.
