Does anyone here on the UCD forum work part time while studying. Im finding it increasingly difficult to obtain the funds I need to make ends meet while doing the reading and the essays that need to be done. Im a security/bouncerman. So for example i worked 5-11 last night after college. Im working tonight at 4 for the landsdown road match. I have an essay due in forst thing in the morning and Im in work again 5-11 tomorrow night. Yes I could probably manage my time better and get it all done. Anyone else have this problem? Where do you work while your studying in UCD and is do you find it difficult to do both?

I work in GAME in Tallaght to pay for college. At the moment I'm doing 16-20 hours a week, which is just about manageable. Pretty much whenever I'm not working or in lectures I'm trying to get college work done and trying to get some sleep. I *do* get everything done, but I'd *like* to get more time to do it all. Sometimes I think there's not enough hours in the week... though because I pay fees I *absolutely* have to work. I'm paying back 75 euro a week on my loan... :(

i usually work just in the summer, i have close on 40 hrs a week in college, live at home and haven't yet (touch wood) have to repeat so i'm probably better off not doing so.

I'm working in Boots in the Pavilions. The hours are ok, think its about 16 a week. Fridays are a pain because I go straight from college to work and then don't finish there til 9:30, bus at 10 and then home around 10:45 (good old 33)

Weekend hours are great though, 2 - 6 on both saturday and sunday. Gives me the chance to get some work done *and* still have a social life.

I guess its all about time management.

I worked every year except 4th year when I jsut got a loan at the start of the year to cover myself (cos working in final year is madness!). It was worst in 3rd year, Had a 40 hour week, plus on top of that had programs to code, reports to write and studying to do. I worked in Dunnes where they insisted on the 2 full days at weekends and 2 evenings during the week. I had training two evenings a week too, so I literally only had one evening to get everything done in - needless to say I failed that year :p Working like that was stupid, but I needed the money so didn't have much of a choice, as is the case with a lot of people.

I'm working in Superquinn. I'm working 21 hours a week at the moment, tuesday night, saturday and sunday. I've been really lucky that they gave me just the one night during the week. My boyfriend had to quit because they were making him work two.

I'm planning to save and quit over christmas but I dont know how likely that is too happen since I'll soon have to get my own insurance policy on my car and I want to go to America next summer, so I'll be needing some dosh. I do really want to have some more free time though.

Ironically enough in the 2 hours since I posted that message above I've been offered a part time job 20 hours a week with Vodafone  Think I might go with it though, cos I've only got 12 hours of lectures a week these days

I work in the Blackrock Clinic every saturday to cover my drink and cigarettes. It's fairly cushy, doesn't interfear with college, and I take on extra hours during the summer/xmas/ester breaks to cover bigger expenses.

Work Saturday mornings as greenskeeper on a golfcourse and Sundays to if I'm needed-hours are very early so I get overtime rates. This and the money I made by working normal days taking as much overtime as possible over the Summer on the course is paying for my repeat year (lets just say I had a bad feeling about the exams!)

I've virtually given up work because of college - final year isn't one to mess around in, to be honest. Still working during reading week, and as I get up to 70 hours a week over christmas, I should be ok for next semester. Crappy job though, wrecks your knees. Starts kind of early too. No such thing as overtime rates blah-di-blah, only extras we get are double time on bank holidays, and €12 for working sunday... which amounts to sfa on a 12-14 hour day, but is pretty sweet on a 5 hour one. Stock taking... it's not just a job, it's a career... heh.

    I don't work. I'm a bum.

Final year, gotta focus, know what I mean?

I don't like working during the term(who does I hear you say) as I only like to focus on one thing at a time. What I find is best for me is to work 60-70 hours a week during the summer. When you get back to college, it's like you're on holidays, college assignments seem easy in comparison, i'm sufficiently disgruntled with working life / real life (tm) and have enough money to last the year. It's all win - win.

I work just two nights a week in a nightclub in town, thought i could've maybe done a weekday night or two so icould still have something that resembles a life at weekends but alas 9am starts and 4am finishes do not work, believe me i tried for a week, and almost died. Working just two nights just about covers petrol, credit and books but not going out fri and sat saves too so not that bad, but i couldn't survive if i wasn't working, paid visa this week so living on twenty euro until tomorrow, my god it sucks!

Work in a call centre. Well flexible hours during evenings and weekends. You have to work a min of 3 4hour shifts a week during those times but after that you can do more 4 hour shifts during the 9-5 hours again if ya want. That said, you are ringing up people to ask them to do surveys, mainly on mobile phones so it is FRUSTRATING!!!!

I work in my shop about 16 hours a week and I end up getting somewhere around a grand a month for that. It's all commission based so it varies month to month. I don't have a grant but I do have free fees so don't have to cover that one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

This is where the fees thing is a big pain in the ass. I got paid €300 today for a fortnight, before I spend a cent there's €150 gone on 2 weeks loan repayment. I'm absolutely broke! :(
