    Not as bad as I expected given the thread title. I wonder if the same thing would happen with ogg.

    Seems like a poor algorithm and / or implementation if it's removing quality from different areas of the sound file each time.

    You don't need a computer or perl scripts to produce something like this. I've got an original Number of the Beast album that sounds just like this. All you need is to get the compact cassete version of the album and leave it sitting on top of a subwoofer for 10-12 years. Course I don't really mind having a borked up cassette version of the album cos all my Iron Maiden cassettes have been replaced by ones I obtained from err... my cousins in america.
