I couldn't choose to be honest. I play a Warwick and I think it's the bees knees (and it's not as classy as the corvette) but the bassist in my band uses a very sweet music man. They both have a different character.

The bloke from Mudvayne plays a Warwick Thumb 5 if my memory serves me correctly.

TBH neither really make my balls jangle, but I think the MM Stingray is one of the finest bass designs there is and that'd be what would sway me if I had to choose between the two.

This is where are paths must split. There can be no love between us now.

The information I have says the Warwick is almost twice the price. Both are active basses, with bolt-on necks and similar pickups.

Warwicks are supposed to have a distinctive bottom-end 'growl' to their sound. They're also supposed to be somewhat 'climate-proof' because of the hardness of the woods used in the neck.

The one that makes me drool is the Warwick, and it certainly wins in the looks department (to my eyes). :)

Hmm... Very hard to say which tbh, they're both fantastic when it comes to basses. A friend of mine has a MM Sub Sterling Bass, and god is it gorgeous, but seriously I think either way you'd be onto a sure fire winner there.

That said, I'd take a Rickenbacker over either.

Is getting both out of the question?

We both knew this day would come. I have never known what it is to love a Warwick and, while I don't exactly love the MM either, it is closer to a G&L L2500, which is what I'd really recommend here :)

Oi, Doc... Why are you not pimping the good old Rickenbacker, eh? Something strange is up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Why? Because he wants a 5 string, without spending $2000, so that rules out the Ric 5. Plus, Rics aren't the best for finger playing or pop and slap, so again, it's another no no.

Another bass worth considering would be the Ibanez SR1005. I have the 6 string version of this (the previous model) and the build quality and spec are truly second to none.

    Oh yeah...

In that case, I'll go and recommend the Music Man, as those are some serious ****ing basses.

They are purty, but the strings are just too close together for comfortable finger playing and the neck pickup is exactly in the wrong place for pop and slap without serious technique adjustment.

From youre info definitely get the Corvette.Musicman are good basses but the SUB range is not great.Alternatively try and pick a used Stingray online.Great basses.

I'm a Musicman, man. And if you really want a Musicman get the Stingray. The SUB is good, but once you actually play a Stingray it's a whole different experience.

But between the Corvette and The Sub, the SUB would be my choice. Dont like the small body in the corvette, nice neck though.

Well, I play a Warwick Streamer, like John2, and it's a great instrument. I'm playing it right now actually. :) I believe it'd do pretty much exactly what you want, though the Corvette would be brighter, for that Mudvayne sound.

Doc, does that apply to the Ric 4-strings as well? I'm mostly a picker anyway, just wanted to know and have never tried a Ric bass.

Yeah I have a 4 string. It's not unbearable nor unplayable, but if you're used to Fender sized spacing it's something that takes a while to get used to and doesn't really help with the whole pop and slap thing. The 5 string looks to have even less space between the strings. If you play with a plec though, get stuck in. The Ric is the only bass I've ever played where you really have to take some low-end out of the amp EQ. Ric tone has no equal :)

    We should form a club

I got mine in musicmaker about four years ago. It was on offer so I got it at a very reasonable price. :D

I got mine on eBay for about six hundred. Quite chuffed with that.
