Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on the current qualifying format in f1 and wheter it should be changed next year or not. I personally like the current format and think it works well however some of the proposals do sound interestin. Whats other peoples views on this.

12 laps, one hour, fastest man gets pole. I have no idea what brain donor changed from this format (possibly a short english billionaire with grey hair), but he should be strung up by his eyelashes and thrown to the dogs.

^ You said it all there! :D

I hear they are planning some shoot out system crap for next year. Pre-2002 qualifying was actually almost as enjoyable as the races themselves but the way they have messed the qualiying system around is just another example of how Bernie and Mosely have done everything in their powers to kill of F1.

Unless they bring back the 12 lap, 60 minute session it will be a load of crap again and they will be coming up some other rubbish idea for 2007.

Change in my view is good. Sometimes the old 12 lap system was good and bad depending on the track i.e Monaco hard to pass traffic. But the FIA wanted to try something different as part of costcutting and allowing equal exposure time for all the sponsers. Plus the tv companies found it hard to keep up with the top lap times.

Now we have had the change it's time to move onto something different. I thought the 1 lap qualifier would be good but instead I find it hard to stay awake sometimes. I would like to see the knockout session on low fuel brought in just to find out if it's any good

The qualifying was originally changed in the hopes of giving the audiences a better show. Often you would find that everyone was afraid to go our first and waste laps on a dirty track, so most of the action was packed into the last 20 mins with every car on track getting in each others way. While we now have cars on track for the whole hour of qualifying, it is extremely boring watching one car do a lap on it's own, so the entertainment bit didn't work.

Unlimited laps . Just let them at it . If they are worried about tyres and cost put a limit of how many sets you have for a weekend .

The skill for F1 used to be about picking the right moment when to go out . Senna used to be a master of this . I havent watched one qualifing session this year because they are boring . I just get the result on ceefax . Its way easier and doesnt waste an hour of my life .

So it's been changed to the 3 15 minute shoot outs. It's not a bad way i think. Isn't it nearly the same as the DTM qualifying system which seems to work well. I know the 12 lap system made for an exciting last 5 mins but really that had to change. Pity it's taking so long though with rule changes every season. Tyre changes are back for races next season too with 7 sets per driver i think.

I think the new appraoch looks interesting, but why has it taken the FIA so long to come up with a decent idea. It's taken them several attempts to try and get it right and finally only now they have decided to ask what the fans think by getting the fans to vote on formula1.com.

Not sure if ye are aware but the reason they have the pauses during qualifying is because ITV demanded it so they can have ad breaks. So no matter what format comes into play it'll all have to be based around what ITV really want and not what the fans want. Since ITV took over coverage Formula 1 has declined as a sport due to substandard coverage and pathetic commentators like James Allen and Louise Goodman

F1 is an international sport, if ITV started making such demands chances are that bernie would just snigger and offer their broadcasting rights to the next interested party. It wouldn;t be very surprising though if the durations were to accomodate advertising for all broadcasters though.

That's what you think eh well ITV have paid Bernie a fortune for broadcasting F1 and to recouperate the cost ITV sells their broadcasts to other countries and also they get paid from advertising.

I don't know if many of you have watched the coverage on Setanta. I know the commentary is worse than ITV sometimes the lads are basing present day facts on stories that are a few years old but they can cover qualifying and the race without too many annoying ad breaks

ITV have a deal with their sponsers that they will display 6 ad breaks during a race this became apparent after Imola (they cut to an ad break 3 laps from the end during the most exciting finish to a race in years) when including myself and many other wrote complaining and this fact about the 6 ad breaks was mentioned in the reply from ITV. As far as ITV are concerned money is more important than supplying quality broadcasting to the fans

Something I do so I don't have to hear the ITV commentry is mute the TV and listen to the commentry on BBC Radio five live! Sounds strange I know. It's no bother to get it on a good AM radio. The commentators are good and easily excitable and I forget their names. Anthony Davidson is on it though.

Yeah heard about that it's a fantastic idea and everybody should do it and tell ITV they are doing it

Shame RTE gave up braodcasting the F1. When ITV would go for a break you could switch over to RTE. Them were the days!!!
