Advertising Internal Positions

Are companies bound by any law or protocol to advertise positions internally? The company I am working for happily advertises externally, without even telling us new positions are available, which is rather irritating.

Could anyone point me to some literature on the subject?

    I very much doubt it.
    It's their policy.
Many companies will state at the interview that they advertise positions internally first and try to sell it as a point for working for them.
I'd raise the issue with your line manager or HR - it's going to have a demoralising effect on the staff if it continues.

They are required by law to advertise all positions internally.
You could check with the department of trade and employment or on http://www.basis.ie

What law would that be? I can't find reference to it.

It may be preferable to advertise internally, there may even be in-house/union agreements to do so but I very much doubt that all firms must by law advertise all vacancies internally before going external.

AFAIK, legaly a position must be publicy advertised, i.e. paper etc.

Unfortunatly, this is the same as advertising internally, as you have the same oppertunitys to view the add and apply for it as any external party to the company.

If a postion is advertised internally, it usualy company policy, and is usually the type of company that makes a lot of internal appointments.

If they didn't bother notifying their current staff of available positions, they obviously have something specific in mind that they don't feel current staff provide the expertise.

It's very poor human resource management, and undermines employee confidence. I would contact my human resource dept. if i was you, and let my concerns be known.

If nothing else, it will show your assertiveness, and may force them to re-consider their policy, and maybe even take note of your leadership quality, and feel they have overlooked you?

Anyway, If you want to clarify your options, and the specific law regarding this, contact the department of enterprise, trade and employment:
