I know its that bad because there's another guy (polish) in the house i share the connection with and he's either uploading or using skype or something to call home???
What would you do so you can at least browse the net at decent speeds and have a decent ping to the above server (ut2k4 server)?
I reset the router a few times, gave me a few mins of gaming time but its anyone for both.
I had a server at home running clarkconnect which worked great, dont know if thats an option here thou.

Is that with Irish broadband? ;)

Unplug your housemate from the router to be sure, but it's highly unlikely using skype or uploading stuff is causing these crappy pings.

    Nah with eircon.
It's the other guy up/down loading.
    Cant even game :(

Block the ports he's using then password protect the router. :-P

Jozi - Come on man :)

Get your CC server into your house and STOP that from happening :)
You should know better than this :):p

You could just ask the other guy to lay off the downloading stuff for a while? Let him leave it going overnight etc.

Zoro: the whole phone in this house is arse ways and would mean that the server is in someones room, he doesnt want it there.
I mentioned it to him before about cutting it down a bit but not much joy since.
It's the upload thats killing it, he uploads pictures and stuf to a ftp for home or something.
I'm going to see about moving and worry about bb in that house then, im way to far out in relation to where college is.

Put it on a switch and limit his bandwidth to half of what is available, he doesn't sound like someone who knows how to share very well and you are getting the ****ty end of the stick.

    Just a switch will work?
I had one when i was using the CCbox, is that what you meant?

you can get software, (free i think) that lets you limit speeds (for certain applications or all of them) on an IP address on the LAN, so check his, get the software and limit himm is he paying for the broadband aswell BTW?

google network limiters or network speed limters.

what's his being polish got to do with it? do polish people have an aura of bad pings?

A normal home switch won't do this, you need a broadband router with this feature or a cisco switcher (big $$$).

You're presumably sharing the cost of the connection? Explain to him that if he wants to use up all the bandwidth, he can pay the whole bill. Otherwise, if you have an old PC lying around (or can get your hands on one), put CC, Smoothwall, IPCop, whatever on it, set up either bandwidth management or QoS and stick it in the attic or a closet somewhere.

Yeah... strangle his connection if you can. Your house mate sounds like a really inconsiderate person.

Just diging a thread up from last year.

I've just moved into a new place and ill prob be faced with the same problem as before, Bandwith.

Its a eircon wireless router, ive had a look around at the setting in it (not even password protected!) ive seen a few things mentioned like Qos and packet filter.
I havent a clue what either do but if i can have a decent ping while others download/upload ill look into taking advantage of them.

Theres a possibility i might be taking the CC box down soon providing i can get them all to connect to it trough a lan and not the wireless from the router, if the above doesnt work.

And that needs to run on all machines?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,558 ✭✭✭CyberGhost

what is this CC box? what does CC stand for?

btw, I can use skype and play at the same time, it does not affect ping anymore, unless I'm uploading stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

    CC = Clarkconnect

Id say with the new upload speeds it might not be as bad.

EDIT: its a linux distro. Allows a pc to act as file server/firewall/ internet gateway allows you to do bandwith shaping per ip and many other things i dont use

    Thanks jozi.

The software solutions only work if you can get the other guy to agree to have it installed on his pc. Your only real solution is a router that supports qos and badwidth limiting. Drayteks are good if expensive. Tell him that the existing one was faulty and you replaced it.

If you have the 384kb upload then it shouldn't be too bad. I tested this in my house last week, with emule running on one PC, the pings were still OK on the other PC. Just make sure that the other person limits their sharing programs to about 8-10kBps upload. Should be OK then.
