Ok i'm buying a new amp. I have about 350-400 quid to play with.

I am into Biffy Clyro and like to output a bit of crunchy distortion but also love very clean bluesy tone as well..

My Guitar is a Fender Mexican Strat with some customshop fat 50' pickups in it.

I'm looking to use maybe a BOSS MT-2 for the distortion, just need a lovely amp that can hold it's own in a practice room wagainst a drumkit!

    Suggestions?

i agree wit the tubescreamer idear...i actually used to use a tubescreamer and a boss od-1 together and they worked really well...h&k at that price are your finest bet

I dunno about that amp... usually amps with a suite of onboard digital effects are a load of gee... I could be wrong, but I'd rather spend that kind of money on a bog-standard amp where all the money has gone into getting the simple stuff right than something where some of the money has gone into a load of add-on ****e I'd never use.

I mean, if you're set on using a pedal for distortion, then just seek out the best clean channel you can find.

TBH, a decent distortion box into a Fender FM212R will be as loud as you'll ever need. Lovely sounding cleans from it. I used it with a ME-50.

anyone got any samples they dcan play for me? my local music shop is pretty crap and they'd have to order stuff in..

what about a Peavey Classic Head unit? could i use that on it's own?

fey....h&k, the germans rarely got it wrong. listen to the byts of that edition 60 amp. Beautiful. The zenamp is rockin and still not outta you price range i think

Can't say I'm overly impressed by that Edition 60 tbh. It's nice but it's nothing spectacular.

i would take that sound over any marshall avt or anythin. It doesnt match the zenamp or duotones or anythin of course but its such a handy little amp

Realistically, you won't pick up a Marshall valve amp in that budget, probably not even second-hand. The JCM valve combos are something I'd avoid anyway. There are lots of more versatile amps for the money.

Versatile no, but do they get *that* tone? Oh yes... ;):D

tsl is a fantastic amp. beautiful tone but lead is a bit saturated. a bit outta ur range me thinks though

Well, the TSLs and DSLs don't really get *that* tone. I think if you're looking for the traditional Marshall sound you really have to go vintage. Tbh, the JCM800 is pretty versatile. But you'll never get a working one for less than $800!

I've recorded a few JCM2000 (TSL/DSL) combos and I was dreadfully disappointed with the sound of them tbh. If you must, go for the big guns. :)

well i can promise you, forget line6 or any of that stuff. take the time with a vetta or zenamp or zenterra and i promise you will fall for digital amps. They are beautful and so versatile

Sorry Eoin, was thinking of the little JCM800 comboes, the 4410's methinks. They'd be very nice if you could stretch your budget. I know there's an eBay store that sells them for 650.

Yo Sei...what model H&K u got? like the soundbytes on their site and interested in getting one ...Zenamp is pricey though ? over a grand off thomann if I remember correctly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

no no the zenamp is about 600 euro. I have the zenamp head. Using it pretty heavily and its just savage. You have to sit with it and really get your sound but its very very versatile. i recomend the zenamp for its price. i just have to buy a decent cab with 30's in it now

Have any of you guy (who are recommending the K&K) had any experience recording the H&K combo?

Im wondering how it would fit in a studio envirnment...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

i have my own studio and the great thing about my h&k is coz its digital it is so easy to record. You get a fantastic clear sound off it. i use to mic my old vortex and 4x12 and it was great. Real punchy distortion. They are no harder than any other amp to record and if you get a digital one you are away with it. Dont let other digital sounds put u off them. Their dsm technoligy is pretty hot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭JMArr

Ok Thomann dont have the Zenamp ...thought I saw it for a grand there a while back ooops...where did you get yours ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,322 ✭✭✭Maccattack

sei, are we talking about the same amp?

Im talking about the Hughes & Kettner Tour Reverb Combo 100 watter. Didnt think there digital(?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

tour reverb aint digital but its a fairly decent amp. I know a lad who has one and its nice enuf. I got my zenamp from musicstore. you can get the combo of it aswell somewhere i think.

Dont see it on musicstore at the mo ...maybe its out of stock.

Def interested tho ..I like the sounds from the modelling amps I've tried so far...vox ,roland, line 6-best imo that I've tested is the roland cube series .They give a lot of flexibity if you're into a wide range of music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

the cube is fantastic.i dont mind line6 modelling too much once its high range but H7K modelling is fantastic for the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭sei046

being honest bud i dont have to much time but if i get a chance at the weekend i certainly. 2morro maybe. Will just give you a rough idea of the amp modelling but they are so different you really need to sit down and tweek them to get it sounding right
