really? Which episode did he say it in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭Spider_Baby!

    Maybe
Desmond is the guy who Hurley was talking to in the institution

    Or, maybe he was the
    eventual replacement
    ??

He said it when they first crashed, he said he was just trying to break the Ice my GF stole my DVD's so I cant look but someone can!

thank you for changing the thread title ;)

apparently hurley told the joke to walt sometime in season 1, no idea on the episode however.

on the 'him' being hurley, i thought that at first.....
but i think Orentiation answers this

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 RawrLostzilla

Yeah I forgot that other nations get to watch this.

Spoilers I dont feel like putting tags in.

Well it is an area in the pacific that might have been emiting the numbers during ww2, and hurley was in a mental hospital so its safe to assume its the same place and if it was emmiting the numbers, what time can we guess-timate the time the project was started?

    Or, maybe he was the
    eventual replacement
    ??

    Hmmm.

To quote the guy in the asylum in episode 118 :
    "You have opened a box."
    "It never stops"

Maybe that signified if had not have played those numbers then none of this would have happened.

Interesting thing in Ep 101 when an engine blows. LINKY (Sorry about the large .GIF file, im new to this thing)

This means those things are why the plane went halfways. (Box obviously well opened at this point....)

If this has been covered before im sorry, new to this specific forum.

Just noticed today when editing chapters on my created DVD.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,554 ✭✭✭herobear

    1. "freeze!"
    2. "Are you feeling alright? You look pale"
    3. "Your snowballs are showing"
    4. "4 8 15 16 23 42"

    and many many more.....

the point is, we dont know the answer until we're told it script wise...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Yeah... I don't remember ever hearing Hurley tell that joke.

And 'Do you smell carrots?' is a much better answer anyway.

It's a common kids joke.. i've heard the joke before many times when i was actually younger and recall it having the same punchline each time.

You're right.. we won't know the answer but if it's "freeze"... kill me now!

Fair enough but every Lost site that quotes Hurley says it at some point during the first season hasn't got a screencap, audio file or video file in proof.

Many of them say it's said to Walt when Hurley's doing the census in 'Raised By Another' but he doesn't even encounter Walt when doing the census.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 RawrLostzilla

I think he said it to walt or charlie... Not during the census but the episode when he makes the Golf Course. Or on the first disc... Ill look for it tomarrow.

Looking for something to say because you just found out that Hurley never said that joke, or are you merely trolling?

    Calm down :)

He might of said it. I've forgotten a lot from the first season already. Could do with watching a few of the key episodes.

Maybe he did say it, but only in a frequency that RawrLostzilla can hear. If that's the case, then I apologise completely.

First thing that came to my mind was "ice to meet you"

No I remeber it, and asked my freind she said he said it too. A little miss-hap with a hacksaw didnt leave me time to watch it today. I remeber he said it it was on the first or second disc....

i thought desmond said what did one silhouette say to the other?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭doh.ie

Two cents' worth... The answer to the joke is what Basquille says - definitely "Do you smell carrots?"

I reckon Desmond is expecting this answer from whoever his replacement is to be, and it's possibly a conversation he had with someone in the past (we may see that in flashback at some stage.)

But while the other answers posed ("Ice to meet you" and "Freeze") are good and funny enough, as this joke exists commonly, its only answer is "Do you smell carrots?"
(Google it - there's no variation on it.)

And I don't think it's ever been used on the show previous to this point. Someone is welcome to trawl through these to check: http://www.lost-tv.com/transcripts/
but I'm pretty sure it's not in there. (Too distinctive a joke; it would've stood out.) There probably was other jokes between Hurley/Walt and anyone else though. (I'm sure Walt told a joke at one point.)

I've gone through most of season one today looking, and I can't find any mention of that snowman joke. The nurse's joke for michael was what's black and white and read all over.

    This leaves only one conclusion.

Subliminal messages! They've been secretly showing the joke over and over, and that's why we all remember it! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

In Numbers the following conversation happens...
    Jin

    [Says something in Korean.]

    Hurley

Hold on a second, you want what now?

[Jin makes a motion with his hands.]

    Hurley

    You want to make snowballs?

    Michael

He wants you to hold the bamboo tighter. I think

Maybe that's what you're thinking of

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41 RawrLostzilla

No he mentions its a stupid joke and that hes just trying to break the ice. He might have said it to claire during the crash.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,842 ✭✭✭steveland?

    No... no he doesn't...

Go to the transcripts page linked to above...

    Hit Ctrl+f and type snow...

The only mention of snow in the entire series is that reference I quoted above...

Face it, you're wrong about this!

Where does he (RawrLostzilla) come up with this stuff anyway?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭phileeoonskee

I dunno I feel that it was said too. Like a splinter in my mind driving me mad. Maybe Lost are feeding us subliminal messages. Like walts backwards speech. So many mysteries so little answers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

Here's a mystery: Why bother to drag this thread back from the dead (where it should have stayed), when we know for a fact that Hurley never said the joke?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭phileeoonskee

Why indeed? Maybe that's what we do here.Maybe, I'm not sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭chupacabra

Look maybe the whole "What did one snow man say to the other snow man?" thing will be revealed in ep 2.08 or 09 when spoiler:Locke and echo discover some startling information about the (dharm)film
I dunno It just seems plausible that some secret password puchline for one Dharma operative to another would be contained in the orientation vid

Use spolier tags not color tags:
spoiler text here
=>
    spoiler text here

People using other themes will see the text in between the color tags.

    Die thread die!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,417 ✭✭✭Miguel_Sanchez

No - live thread. Be free. Sprout and blossom. Live long and prosper etc. etc.

I was going to say that if Hurley had said the joke then it would be fairly obvious where he had heard it from - that loony in the loony bin.
he was probably in the bunker at some point and that's why he keeps repeating the numbes etc. If that was the safe phrase or whatever to identify your replacement then that is the tie in with Hurley

But Hurley didn't say it or so everyone claims. I can't remember and frankly I'm not too bothered.

Let's talk about the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm that Hurley as in instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭phileeoonskee

I heard about that curb your enthusiam ep. Didn't he play a drug dealer? How's about a brief recap? Anyone?
But back on topic. Apperently out of all my friends who watch lost I'm the only one who thinks that Hurley said it. And I'm the only one that saw this thread so i'm guessing that's why we all debate this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

He never said it. Get over it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭phileeoonskee

But this theory is all I have left. I CAN'T GIVE IT UP! OOPS I ACCidently hit the caps lock. Why do you hate this thred so much. Just because your right and we're wrong? Thats a ... well actually that's a great reason!
