its to get people to know the frequency of a college radio station

doesnt sound like an "event" but more an information campaign you need.
    Whats the frequency?
You may be able to play with it to reinforce the message.

given that its a student radio station, a quirky campaign would help alongside normal coverage techniques (posters, section in campus newspapers etc..).
Its also helps you have your whole target market within a confined space - within the campus itself - so I can see why you were looking for one of those mini airships.
Perhaps do something with a highly visable point / high activity area on the campus itself?
Also, its a good figure / frequency to work with if you had to get creative with it.
No doubt you did your best over Freshers Week to get as much notice as possible.

Maybe something like advertising in some of the local bars. Free pens always get a message across. I remember people in my class a few years ago still had a DCU pen(this was nearly a year after they got it). Judging by your first post it sounds like you're in need of something a little more 'outhere'. Whats the price range you have to play with?

depending on what it is but around 1000

I'm not sure if you could get permission to do this, but even if you could for a week or two, it'd be brilliant.
See the attached pic - if you could erect around 3 similar boards around the tower... it looks just like a radio style microphone.
You'd be bound to get plenty of publicity too and use the finished result for pr and poster campaigns.

get someone to put together a lot of familiar samples of music into one piece maybe a minute long - something relevent, humourous, catchy and that has a mix of the music you play - and if you can get your ad over the intercom randomly durin the day that would be nice!

How about large format signs filling a window maybe or hanging from an entrance hall. Made from EPS (expanded polystyrene) they are lightweight, 3 dimensional and relatively inexpensive. Might suit if you are looking for something different.

    Check out Made in Hollywood
