Has anyone here actually made money from their photographs? I mean anything from selling to family/friends/businesses to stock sites?

And if you're a professional, how difficult is it to make money from photography here in Ireland?

Personally I've made about $4 so far on shutterstock with 10 or so photos but it is more of an experiment for me to see if it actually works. It's nice to know that someone liked your photo enough to pay for it.

    So, anyone else?

Nope, still in the "gettin to know my camera" stage with my 300d. Takes a good while to get everything together. Haven't had a decent picture yet. Hopefully its not just me. Someday i'd love to sell a photo or two.

I got money for photographs..but that was more a blackmail sort of situation. ahem.
I do it purely for pleasure, and am only starting out. It appears (The active members at least)our user base are amateurs (albeit, some serious) primarily. Sorry, cannot be of much more help.

i've made money from people paying me to take their photos
also from magazines paying me to use my photos
and i've also sold prints of some of my shots

if you're a pro photographer it's very hard to make money as there's so many good people who do it for a hobby who undermine the professionalism aspects of the job making it harder and harder to get people willing to pay and respect/obey copyright laws

Nice photos, alb. Did you use a polariser on some of those latest scenes (Dunguaire castle B/W, Spanish Point, etc), or just fiddle with saturation/gamma levels at the editing stage...?

Thanks, I've no filters that fit my nikon equipment yet, so I had to do what I could in photoshop.

Note to self: must learn a bit of Photoshop. I bought a polariser on eBay for my Finepix S5000, but I invariably don't have it with me when I need/want it!

"Eee, there were none of that, in my day..." :o

I used to leave my polariser on my old camera all the time and probably will again when I get a new one.

Well, I've a skylight 1A permanently attached, but I found myself shooting some nice sky/water scenery down in Ballinskellig recently, and wished I'd something a bit more 'punchy' - it was late afternoon, lots of hazy, setting-sun stuff in the atmosphere...

To come back to the original question — I've often wondered what the chances would be of flogging prints on eBay, where you'd probably have a less discerning punter? I could see a lot of American buyers going for the "Genuine Oirish" castles/landscapes/John Hinde kinda stuff, in signed limited editions from a "Genuine Oirish" up-and-coming artist, etc. ;) They certainly seem to snap up the old Guinness memorabilia/shillelaghs/"Limerick" lace, etc.!

Years ago, I put myself through college doing family/kids' portraits/1st Holy Communions/the odd wedding, so I'd be well used to "prostituting" my art... :D

[Edit: Of course, if you're handy with Photoshop you could always leave the camera out of it altogether and do like this guy...]

Ive sold a few gig photos(double figures...just) through my photobox account but dont think its too good as people can only see small versions of the pics online which is annoying.

More a hobby than a business as I dont have that much time, or knowledge.

I sell a few pictures each month from my site below. i was asked to do 3 jobs in late october but i will be away in Turkey taking more portfolio shots. My best job was for Bushido fighting rings, i got triple figures for that.

I was working for Irish Broadband for a while and had no time for photography but now i have left them and will be back in the field again

I've sold publication rights to a producer for a significant ammount. I've been published five times to date by local newspapers, twice front page and never been paid for that. I'm also selling mounted prints in a local shop at €35 each, they're particularly big and well mounted with an information pack - but I'm afraid they're not actually selling. :(
Still, I'm only seventeen so I'm not doing too bad.

Thanks! I was just on your gallery, but was having extreme difficulty accessing some areas using firefox - IE seemed to work a tad better... It could be my internet though, I've had issues tonight.
Some beautiful photos on there, I wish you the best of luck (or at least better than waht I've had :D) with your e-commerce venture!
