Amsterdam to connect all houses to fibre optic network

The council of Amsterdam has received approval from the ministry of domestic affairs for the connection of all houses to a optic fibre network, writes Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. Amsterdam will invest EUR 6 million to set up a fibre optic company, Citynet. In phase one, 40,000 houses in the suburb Zeeburg will be connected. In the year 2010, 450,000 houses should be connected to the fibre optic network. The ministry requires that at least one commercial party participates in the project. Seven companies have expressed interest: Draka, Emtelle, Eurofiber, KPN, Nacap, TKF and Volker Stevin Telecom. To connect a house to the fibre optic network, it will cost between EUR 400 and EUR 600. There is still the question of whether the government should partly finance the project since ADSL and cable offer high-speed internet as well. The cities Eindhoven, Rotterdam, Leeuwarden, Groningen and several municipalities also have plans for fibre optic networks.

With our MANs – which run fibre under the houses and are not designed to connect them – we are one step ahead of the Dutch, unfortunately into a cul de sac. But what the heck, we'll get our hot-spotted towns...
