I know there cheap and fairly straight forward to set up out of a box but i want to put an oldish pc back to work as either a gateway or router, is there a point and click bit of software out there that can help me do this?
I have a good sat connection with a wired/wireless config with 8 pzs and want to restrict certain protocols on some pzs and allow others access to certain parts of the network and one or two other things, if i had enough knowledge of the workings of windows i could probably do what i need but getting an old computer back to work and playing around with some software might be a bit of fun.....................

If you want a machine dedicated to running as a router then you might want to take a gander at these options:

    www.ipcop.org
    www.smoothwall.org
    www.m0n0.ch/wall

I have a good sat connection

Sat connections dont like being shared as far as I know, since they normally have 2 adaptops; a dialup modem and a sat receiver.

Apart from that, smoothwall seems to fit the bill. At present I use windows XP ICS to share internet between 2 desktops and 2 latops. ICS is pretty basic, and I find the uPNP discover and control unreliable, but it works.

I intend to implement smoothwall on an old laptop sometime in the future. It is a slimmed down linux distro, and is supposed to run on a 486 without hassle.

Windows as a router - easy 98 or above will do this with a simple registry tweak. - google for ipenablerouting
(windows 95 has this setting but blue screens)

Windows blocking protocols etc - You could try something like antigum outpost to block traffic - but forget it use and use Linux/BSD instead.

Another option is if you only want it for internet access is to setup SquidNT on the windows box and put rules in squid - it's not a firewall !

You can't go wrong with clarkconnect and it will fit what you want exactly. You can download the home version here
Have a gander here for step by step instructions to build your own server and install clarkconnect. :D
