Tried game dawson st, gamestop liffey st & henry st, hmv henry st, and Smyths - all sold out.

Smyths did have Castlevania, but its not what i wanted. They all had loads of PSP games though

I've bought most my games over the net since i got my DS - but now that there's some decent games coming out here - you'd think I could buy them here! Its a farce.

Its a farce because they obviously had ridiculously small numbers of the game to start with. WHich is in line with Nintendo's overall recognition of the European market which is another farce.

    Once more, to summarise:

    FARCE!

Yeah, I like the word farce. Sounds kind of like farts.

anyway back ot, I wouldn't have agreed with you but I recently moved to the US and have been pleasently surprised at the amount of Ninty games available at normal places like EB games. Bigger than the pc sections but smaller than ps and xbox which is to be expected given the market share which is how it should be god dammnit.

40 copies? so you summarise that that's a large amount then?

When, say, GTA-SA was released how many copies did you get in?

Or FIFA-05/06? What about Wipeout Pure?

I'd wager that in each case it was more than 40.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

Generally, in Game anyway, the store get in the copies that were preordered and maybe a few more. Well, games like Advance Wars anyway. Did you preorder it?

I'd say the majority of copies went to british stores first, and then the Irish preorders were catered for. Any excess would stay in England.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

The point Flogen, is that this IMHO is a triple-A title, in league (in anticipation at least) with some of the previous titles I mentioned. Its quite obvious that the shops got feck all stock in. So either you pre-order, or you're left with your dick in your hand. I've never preordered a game (in a real shop), one of the few benefits of being able to buy something in a real shop is just to go in pick it up off the shelf and take it home. I don't see why I should have to resort to preparatory work - might as well just buy everything online.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

triple A titles are often only in short supply, it just happens like that because demand is greater so stock is streched across the market more.

I don't know how many copies game got in across the company, but I'm sure they knew that demand was there, the chances are they didn't get nearly as many as they wanted to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

and no ojn launch day we didnt receive more wipeout pure. and you can hardly compare the launch of advance wars(a portable game) to the launch of GTA which has been the biggest launch a game has seen. the only people who got a copy of gta SA on launch day were people who preordered(from our store anyway) and that was well over the hundred mark. if you want a game preorder it. then youll get it. I only got my castlevania for DS as i preordered it and even though i worked there i wouldnt have gotten it if i hadnt preordered it as we only got 4 copies in and all of those were pre orders.

and how do you expect to be able to walk into a shop a few days after the release of a "triple A" titleand expect them to have it in stock. games release on fridays. if it is a triple A title its obviously gonna sell. you shuold have known that and shuold have gotten it earlier

I'm sorry - I seem to have misunderstood the relationship of "shop" and "customer".

One of two scenrios has happened:
    1. Game/Gamestop etc. underestimated the demand for the game and ordered too few.
    2. The distibutor (Nintendo Europe?) didn't provide enough stock.

In case of number 1, then I feel I am justified in my grievance. If this was a PS2 game they would have ordered plenty.

In case of number 2, it neatly sums up Nintendo's disdain for the European/Irish market - in which case they deserve any beating they get from Sony (or others) in the market.

DAMN! Forgot to check Smyths last weekend! Well, I have 'vania on backorder with play so I hope nintendo decide to produce more. Although I fear the initial shipment will be the only one produced. As was the case with previous versions of the game on GBA.

Edit: my bad, play have it back in stock!

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

It could be that Game ordered more than enough, but only sent them to shops that had the demand, with places like Dawson St. having demand for around 40 copies. The fact is if you buy it online you're probably preordering it, and there's every chance that they'd be out of stock on launch day too, although given that websites are centralised there's less chance. perhaps Game in Oxford St, London got 200 copies in because it had 200 preorders, and there were none to spare. Game supplies the demand, and preorders are often the best way of gauging that demand. I'm sure many games have been hyped up and undersold, so why buy stock that you can't be sure you'll sell, at least preorders are some kind of guarentee, and even then they don't cost anything so there's every chance the person won't bother picking up their copy anyway.

Found one copy hidden in HMV in the Pavilions in Swords... sneaky sneaky sir

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,919 ✭✭✭✭Gummy Panda

i think 40 copies is a fair amount.

In all fairness, if they got 200 copies and sold 200 copies would you not be complaining that they didn't get 201 copies so you could get a copy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

    yeah thats right... 201.

You'd think this was a new occurrence - its not - its endemic. Game shops are under pushing Nintendo games and Nintendo are doing feck all to do counter this by continuing to screw the euro market. The fact of the matter is shelves are stacked with lots of crap games for other concoles that didn't solely rely on preorders. I wonder why?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

shut up whining and go buy it now. ive seen it in plenty of places since moday.

in my experience its usually a mix of both, all too often the Buyer for a game is not in store, i can speak for gamestop but not game, the buyers are usally in the head office and away from the frontline.

however, with such a demand in this country for games and the lack of decent titles for the DS its obvious that the one decent game to come out on the console is gonna fly out.

i believe game shops are "underselling" nintendo stuff because its just not what sells anymore, you have to lok at the percentage points, how many have a DS or Gamecube compared to PSP or PS2.? of course they are gonna cater for the higher share of console owners, hence more games for ps2 and PSP. these companys are out to make money, not cater for a niche market....its unfortunate but thats the way it is??!!

got mine today (first time i tried) in GAME cruises st, Limerick city
didnt seem to be any shortage but that was over a week ago that the orignal poster was complaing about it
anyway just to say i think its a great game (first time ive played a advance wars game) im on level 5 and being playing 1hr and 20mins
    is that good?

I think what is even more annoying is gamestore staff turning people away from Nintendo consoles. The Gamecube and DS have just as many great games as their rival consoles, some would say more games of higher quality but gamestore staff keep changing the customers minds to get and xbox or PS2. The worst case was when I witnessed the staff of one of the Game stores in Dublin turn a girl who was a huge fan of survival horror away from buying a Gamecube and got her to buy an Xbox with Halo. She mentioned she liked the Resident Evil games and even with the excellent Resi remake and Resi 0 and also Resi 4 1 month away from release they wouldn't shut up about how great Halo was. I wouldn't have cared if they plugged the PS2 since it has it's fair share of survival horror games but the xbox really hasn't got very many and any it does are available on other systems.

The understocking of DS games is a bit of a problem. I don't think the suits that run the games shops realise that the DS is selling remarkably well close if not as many as the PSP.

Trust me, if I'd been selling her a console, she'd have been leaving the shop with a GC and the entire Resident Evil collection, and possibly Eternal Darkness too :)
*does her bit for teh pimpage of Nintendo*

Don't think the majority of people who work in game shops know what they're talking about, most of the time it's just bias.

Went into a Gamestop yesterday, they've completely shelved all Gamecube support. Thought that was a bit shíte; its still got a bit of life in it. Rushing into the next generation I guess...

Does anyone know how well the DS is doing over here? The shops seem to be smushing it into the back with all its Nintendo counterparts, but is that just 'cos Nintendo doesn't buy shelf space?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,919 ✭✭✭✭Gummy Panda

Game are terrible for their staff recommendations.

When the xbox came out, staff were recommending it and some of its really **** games like obi-wan. The guys were even wearing Xbox t-shirts. Now its psp and playstation 3.

I was in GAME on henry st about 2 weeks ago and the manager was telling kids that psp is the best handheld ever and that they shouldn't buy any other console but the playstation3. She was wearing a suit trying to look all professional going around the store, LOL!!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,396 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

For kids the DS is probably the best console to get as well. For 180 you get a DS and game. For a fully functional PSP with game you are spending over 500 on console decent mem stick and game. DS games seem to cater for all ages. As for the PS3 recommendation, well nobody has played the bloody thing yet.
Trust me, if I'd been selling her a console, she'd have been leaving the shop with a GC and the entire Resident Evil collection, and possibly Eternal Darkness too

Well it was on Dawson street so don't think you were involved :)

    Sure as hell wasnt me!

Gummy panda yes I know who you are on about and they arent the brightest spark in the world when it comes to games but lets face it. people need jobs. they have experience in similar positions and will learn. while i hate to admit it the retarded public wants playstation written on their console before Nintendo. every store youll go into the manager will tell you the newest thing out will be best(except one manager i know of) and that you shuold buy it cause it will be huge and wont be able to get one until the new year. when all you have to do is walk around to hmv or tower records and pick yourself up a psp or whatever.the managers are watching their own backs and you probably would too in that situation if it was your job. they have to meet targets and stuff.

I as a sale assistant give my honest opinion on what a game or console will be like. or what I prefer not what people in general prefer. and I have customers who come up to me and ask questions about games cause they know i am honest and amnt out there to rape peoples wallets.

ps advance wars is still hard to track down...... ;)

I walked into gamestop on the second day of release and I not only had the choice of about 10 new copies left I even managed to get a preowned copy for 34.99.....not bad I think you'll agree

I came across this today, thought fans of Advance Wars might be interested. It's a custom web-based version of the game allowing you to play other people through your browser. I haven't played it myself yet, but apparently it features aspects of both the GBA games tied into one.

    Check it out here:

i was having a discussion one day in hmv in liffey valley, it was about to be an argument only for my girlfriend pulled me away before i got even hotter! a young girl confirmation clothes on with her friends buy a cube with mario (she told me in the q she loved mario game). im an xbox man and i told her id get an xbox but when she said about mario i told her then the cube is the best if thats what games you like.
she got to the counter and the lads started to slag her and make fun of her saying she was young and stupid and why wasn't she buying the ps2 and its so uncool to buy a cube. the poor girl was nearly in tears, after all she was only 12ish. i jumped in and told the lads to shut it and such discussion followed. anyway, i stood there beside teh girl while she bought the cube and went out happy.
that kind of attitude in teh game shops needs to change. i guess it was because they all had psp tshirts on and a big psp banner behind them.

As an epilogue to this I noticed in GAME in blanchardstown the DS / GBA section has been moved to the front and is taking up 3 full shelves. The PSP has been moved to the back wall and appears to be occupying a much smaller space.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 8,679 Mod ✭✭✭✭Rew

Hmmm i preordered mario DS in there last week and they were rearanging the entire place, I saw only 3 DS titles on the shelf and was very dasapointed but that would explain what was going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,176 ✭✭✭1huge1

yes the ds is really starting to have considerable shelf space in my local stores outnumbering the psp in all

Game in blanch has all the gba/ds stuff in the front of the shop the last few weeks in a really good spot right next to the door as you walk in. The whole point of pre ordering is that you dont have to spend the next few weeks looking for the game cause its sold out, sorry you missed it but maby youll pre order the next time you want something this bad.
